The Royal household was in mourning today when it was announced The Duchess of Cornwall had been put down following a fall while out hill walking in Scotland.
Clarence House explained that although emergency services arrived on the scene within minutes of being called out, it was already too late to save the Duchess.
A local vet attending the accident scene was said to have taken just one look at the stricken mare and concluded 'it would be completely insane to let her live on in such a sorry state. The suffering would be cruel and intolerable, it is one of the worst cases I have ever seen'.
It was then he inspected the Duchess and discovered the broken leg
The tragedy comes just days before the Aintree Grand National takes place, where bookies had The Duchess as an outside favourite to cause an upset in one of the main events.
Plans by Her Majesty to put the Duchess out to stud following the meeting were ruined following the news but local restaurant Chez Viande de Chaval came in with a late offer to save the day.
In a short statement, the Queen said that despite their differences down the years, she was relieved the Duchess 'would not end up being boiled, rendered and turned into a pot of glue'.
Although Prince Phillip was quick to point out it was about the only way the Duchess would ever get her face on the back of a first class stamp.
