The BBC has been forced to defend itself this morning against a backdrop of "excessive" and "unnecessarily intrusive" election coverage following accusations of a "spendthrift" attitude.

"The BBC simply have too many spare resources if they can keep a watch on all of the potential MPs twenty-four hours a day", said Nick Clegg, leader of the Liberal Democrats. "It was always an ill-advised plan to run live election coverage on anything but polling day itself as there were never going to be enough soundbites, quotes or interesting events to keep a whole department busy throughout each day, let alone the small hours. They must have money to burn."

BBC officials have justified their actions, but have agreed to tone down their policy of 100% candidate monitoring. "We admit that in some cases we have overstepped the mark", said a spokesperson. "Posting snippets of intimate bedroom activities was probably a bad idea but we stand by our plans to change the swing-o-meter to a toilet-trip-o-meter each evening".
