Cinema cashiers have seen nothing like it in years, as the great British public flock to enjoy the latest madcap adventure from the most celebrated team in comedy film history. Even though its run has barely started, Carry on Campaigning seems set to smash all box office records.

It’s election year and Carry on Campaigning follows the adventures of hapless prime minister Gordon Browncow (played by Peter Butterworth) and his devious sidekick Lord Peter Mandyman (Kenneth Williams) as they try to revive the party’s failing fortunes with a barnstorming tour around the country.

The trouble is that bumbling Chancellor of the Exchequer Darling Alistair (Bernard Bresslaw) seems to have lost all control of his ledger, while, despite the stern strictures of Jack Strawberry (Charles Hawtrey), a gang of double-dealing bankers have stolen into Downing Street and caught the whole cabinet with their trousers down.

Talk about double entry accounting! No matter how often Mandyman says “Oooh Darling!”, things just go from bad to worse. Meanwhile, smooth opposition leader David Blabberon (Kenneth Connor) and his gang of posh shysters are try to steal their jobs some saucy new policy intiatives.

But Blabberon has problems too. The ghost of the dreaded Lady Ratcher (Barbara Windsor) continues to haunt the party and dopey deputy George Plodsborne (Terry Scott) bumbles from one policy disaster to another, while lovable Cockney rogue Ken Spark (Sid James) threatens to upset the applecart with his earthy pro-European opinions. And cheeky Liberal leader Nick Pegg (Jim Dale) hopes for some proportional representation of his own!

With no-one seeming to like any of them very much, the leaders pin their hopes on a contest between the bevy of busty beauties they married. Will sultry Samantha Blabberon (Valerie Leon) stir up the nation into a blue mood? Or will the down to earth charms of Sarah Brown (Joan Sims) make us all see red? It’s laughs all the way to polling day with Carry on Campaigning.
