leave your stuff to ferment for a few days

I'm not sure this is the right verb. According to my dictionary, "Both foment and ferment can be used to talk about stirring up trouble", but I think "mature", "prove" or possibly "improve" might be more appropriate - ferment to me suggests beer or arguments. Oh, maybe you're right.

Anyway, in the spirit of accuracy I'd also like to point out that the reference to spending time carefully honing your submission has actually gone from the most recent version of the Guidelines for Writers.

By the way, I have no idea what the original sub is all about.

It's a pleasure - too many nasty people around here, not enough helpful advice, is what I reckon.

Can you try a bit harder, please? This would be a half-smile-raising Facebook status update, but it's just not enough for a site that's supposed to be for people who are already half-good at writing funny news stories.

I genuinely wish you well, but maybe try posting your subs on Facebook first, and if your friends all laugh at them, then try them here.

It would be a real shame for the few excellent submissions here to be drowned by people half-heartedly trying stuff out without really thinking about it, so please take the editor's advice and leave your stuff to ferment for a few days before posting just the very best.

All the best to you, sir.
