She is a cracker, but does have strangely skinny legs.

But you know what they say. 10% of men like skinny legs, 10% like fat legs and 80% like something in between.

Don't know if J&S would work now, as a lot of the need for innuendo and double entendre isn't there any more.

Plenty of comedy that comes from a Jewish perspective around, isn't there? Larry David, intrinsically Jewish, David Baddiel's got a comedy film coming out about Judaism/Islam in the UK. And there's plenty of Jewish comedians around that don't make their religion pivotal to their stuff, and maybe it's a good thing that they don't have to. Isn't Stephen Fry technically a Jewish comedian?

For me, I think this all comes down to the distinction between content and intention. No reason jokes can't feature broadly-brushed or finely honed representations of all colours, creeds, and persuasions, it's the point being made behind the humour that matters.

I've now got a horrible image of Edward's apparently disembodied head attempting unspeakable things with a toast rack while Frank Muir and Dennis Norden look on rubbing themselves.

And having done -- purely in the name of research -- a Google image search for the Dr's new assistant you should all be ashamed of yourselves. How old is she, 12?

My dad loved RTH so we always had it on.
I can remember laughing at J&S but it was probably the funny voices rather than the hidden humour (I was only 10 at the time)
You lot might get off on the new Doctor's companion (like shagging a toast rack) but I've got a picture of Barry Took on my wall.

Just had a look on Wikipedia. Homosexuality was still illegal, which makes it more bizarre. Kenneth Williams and Hugh Paddick did it, and Barry Took and Marty Feldman were the writers. Yes they basically were two very camp characters and lots was suggested but never actually said.

Brilliant writing and the Palare was fascinating. Would it cause offence now?

I've never heard any Julian and Sandy bits, but they were full of innuendo and used a lot of palare right? I've been under the impression they were subverting contemporary attitudes towards homosexuality and sexuality generally by sneaking smut onto the airwaves.

Barry Took was one of the writers on Round the Horne wasn't he? And a huge influence on radio comedy generally? I'm still slightly amazed by the idea that he was anything more than the boring old guy who did Points of View, the only redeeming feature of which was that it meant it was still ten more minutes before the news started, and therefore still not bedtime, even though Dynasty was over...

One of the main reasons for being on NB is that you CAN discuss uncomfortable issues without fear of it being taken personally.
Surely that's what we are here for?
If we can't, then who the hell can?
How can you aim/hope/try to deliver satirical humour and not step on a few toes along the way. Surely that is actually one of the main AIMS
I have not seen anything I would consider 'nasty'
Some things I don't like - it used to be called 'life'
If the humour is too cosy then it can hardly be considered challenging.
The whole point is that we can then discuss whatever we interprete as right/wrong - accectable/unacceptable
If you don't agree with someone doesn't make you right and them wrong.

Edit: Now I love Julian and Sandy.
If you loose the ability to poke fun at yourself then we are doomed. What happened to all the Jewish comedians? They were the masters at sending themselves up.
Now they are so far up their own arses you can't say a thing against them for fear of being branded anti-semetic

I'm having a quiet work morning too unfortunately. Don't expect things to pick up until after the election.

But getting back to jokes. I nearly floated the topic of radio humour in the shape of Round the Horne. It seems unbelievable now, but the Julian and Sandy sketches were being done at a time when homosexuality was no longer a criminal offence in the UK. They seemed very funny at the time, but looking back from our current standpoint, they are really disquieting.

Another example of humour being ok at the time but unacceptable now I suppose. To put it mildly.

Apparently every country has it's own version of "Irish" humour, ie near neighbours they like to brand as being unintelligent.

I don't know about the nasty stuff floating around. I'm guessing that was in the little spiff between Rikkor and Plucky, and I tuned out of that.

I had originally just ignored this old pub joke. I didn't want to get all self-righteous again and in another row. Again, I'm sure no offence was meant, and probably none taken by anybody (although, look at it: *begins over-analysing joke* is there any need within the structure of the joke for the men to be Irish? If the answer's no, then making them so is only there to suggest the Irish are stupid, scheming drunks. Not to worry, they can take a joke *finishes over-analysing joke*).

But the follow-up points got me thinking. Sometimes to ignore something is to condone it.

Ignore the squabbling and the personal jibes by all means, but the idea that someone should keep it to themselves if they have an opinion on something for fear of being seen as a prig who can't take a joke didn't sit right with me.

Hope it doesn't look like I'm just targeting you Scroaty -- I just think you're raising points that are worth debating. And you caught me on a quiet work morning...

Scroaty, you silly marrow-fancier (esp as you brought it up again!)
We're just engaging in a healthy full and frank exchange of views. At home, this would be the point at which I'd hit you round the head with a kitchen appliance, but instead take a manly pat on the back - you raise an interesting debate and we're just enjoying chucking in our tuppennies. I completely agree that it is better to express oneself with good manners. Oooh - sorry, just have to lift my left bum-cheek for a fart. Lucky I need to chew my toenails at the same time.
Now don't go getting your navy beans in a knot - it's all a bit of fun after all.

Mary: I was trying to say that if people don't like, are offended by or disagree with something, they should be free to express their opinions, but in a way that doesn't cause offence. There were some fairly nasty comments floating around. It was all about manners really.

And yes, Neal, seriously. What I'm saying is if you don't like it, just ignore it.

I though this was all over and things had calmed down.

Umps...will you be on the telly this season?
Can we look out for you doing a 20/20 at some time. Do you do the Durham matches?

Too many humble opinions
Why not just replace the names Shamus and Murphy with dunno....Eric and Don or Hans and Dietmar or Vladimir and Borsk or Julian and Sandy
Does that help or is it still racist?
Or is it interpretation that makes it racist.
Would a 20 year old see it is 'an Irish joke' or just a joke.
Is it a 1970's joke or are you looking at it through 1970's spectacles.
I look forward to being portrayed as a fearless war hero in future subs.

Scroaty, as the actress said to the bisexual bishop, you cannot have it both ways.
If you want an unmoderated forum, you have to accept that folk will sometimes disagree with what is posted.
If you want people to moderate their responses, then you have to accept moderation of your submissions.
To be able to post submissions/opinions/comments that are going to offend people, but deny them the right to reply, would be somewhat against the spirit of free speech what, and wouldn't really be cricket.
I rather like that NB moderates itself via the people within - we're never all going to agree, but we should all be free to say what we want.

Brilliant idea Mr U. Rancid criticisms just about sums it up.

I'd also like to add that it's a great shame that things have got like this. Other forums have moderators to keep everyone in order. NB showed that people could manage without this control. Now it seems it can't.

If people don't like something, they should keep it to themselves. It's just good manners.

I feel the time has come for NB to introduce a censor's room. It would require a new login name and password, and qualification certification. Members would be required to provide evidence of three years' full time employment at The Daily Mail as well as a GCSE certificate in English Language.

Accredited censors would then have a forum where they would be able to post their rancid criticisms of their fellow contributors to their hearts' content - without any of the rest of us being able to bump into them.

In response to all the criticism of the quality of the writing on this site, I bring you a joke I received this - a joke which made me laugh out loud, and does so every time I read it.

Enjoy.

Shamus and Murphy fancied a pint or two but didn't have a lot of money between them; they could only raise the staggering sum of one Euro.

Murphy said 'Hang on, I have an idea.'

He went next door to the butcher's shop and came out with one large sausage.

Shamus said 'Are you crazy? Now we don't have any money at all!'

Murphy replied, 'Don't worry - just follow me.'

He went into the pub where he immediately ordered two pints
of Guinness and two glasses of Jamieson Whisky.

Shamus said 'Now you've lost it. Do you know how much trouble we will be in? We haven't got any money!!'

Murphy replied, with a smile. 'Don't worry, I have a plan, Cheers! '

They downed their Drinks. Murphy said, 'OK, I'll stick the sausage through my zipper and you go on your knees and put it in your mouth.'

The barman noticed them, went berserk, and threw them out.

They continued this, pub after pub, getting more and more drunk, all for free.

At the tenth pub Shamus said 'Murphy - I don't think I can do any more of this. I'm drunk and me knees are killing me!'

Murphy said, 'How do you think I feel? I can't even remember which pub I lost the sausage in.'
