I'm a bit pissed, so y'all have me at a bit of a disadvantage, but I reckon it IS possible to do unPC material in an environment where PC material is expected and the target is the man on stage. He is assuming the clothes of the fool and we laugh at him. Having said that, Frankie Boyle's show is a bag of shite.

I was surprised that Dave Cohen didn't also mention Ricky Gervais. I'd say his material has a lot in common with Carr and Boyle's.

Dave Cohen's piece has some fair points but linking Carr, Boyle & Sadowitz in with the Mannings of the world seems somewhat bizarre and far fetched.

Manning was a tin of ronseal whereas the others (to different degrees) outwardly say that they are a tin of ronseal but the joke works because the audience knows that they are not a tin of ronseal but whatever the metaphorical equivilent is when tin of ronseal = obnoxious racist/misogynistic/homophobic bore.

It's a wheeze that plays on the fact that stand ups are a liberal right on pinko guardian reading bunch who take offence at most that life has to throw at them. And get this: it turns that on it's head! But that joke's wearing thin and Frankie Boyle plays it as close to the knuckle as he can. As Kurt Vonnegut warned us in Mother Night, we should be careful who we pretend to be because we might well become that person.

Anyway Boyle is a tiring Bully who I still find very funny from time to time but Tramadol Nights is appaulling ill conceived and rubbish.

Oh - and Sadowitz can do what he likes as far as I'm concerned, I'd trust him 100% with any material. Boyle stole his whole shtick from him but doesn't do it half as well.

I've only ever seen Jerry Sadowitz live once, at Glastonbury Festival. Maybe I was younger, more easily pleased (and pleasantly stoned, no doubt), but I laffed myself silly. He went into the audience and punched a couple of people. Like I say: easily amused. Of course, if he's still doing this then maybe the joke's wearing thin...

I feel the same way about Jerry Sadowitz. He's utterly predictable, does a few magic tricks, brilliant ones to be fair, then calls everyone in the audience a cunt and shouts about hoping people will die horribly from cancer.

One of the most boring gigs I've ever been to.

Thanks for the link, Stan, brilliant article.

It doesn't take long for 'outrageous' to turn into 'tedious'. Comedy needs to release a few surprises, but Frankie Boyle seems stuck in a groove. I pretty much know what's coming next...

The thing I find even harder to forgive than the lazy attention-seeking "look at me, I say cunt" comedy (he's a really smart bloke - he can be so much funnier and still push the envelope) - is that Frankie has left me feeling that Katie Price has the moral high ground.

The 'where to draw the line' debate is a regular and robust one around here and I'm firmly on the side of free speech. But just because he should be allowed to say what he wants doesn't mean that he can't use some compassion - even for Katie Price. To make a twisted joke about a disabled child is pretty grim in my humble, especially as he has been blessed with a healthy child. Wouldn't like that kind of karma knocking around my family. God knows we've enough hexes and voodoo curses to contend with already.

there are comedians who choose to make jokes against the powerful, and comedians who choose to make jokes against the powerless.

'Taboo' subjects fail to shock if they're wheeled out too often. Swearwords too. They need using sparingly, like chilli powder in cooking. I've only ever seen Frankie Boyle on Mock the Week, and he always seemed overly pleased with himself about getting a laugh out of something offensive. Picking on vulnerable targets can look like bullying, too, especially when the world is full of mad, greedy, self-important bastards who deserve to be mocked and satirised...
