The chap who invented Subbuteo wanted to call it 'Hobby,' but was not allowed to for some reason. Hence it is named after the Latin name for the bird of the same name.

No worries.
It's got more stars than I expected anyway.
I do have a big anti-RU chip on my shoulder, watch the media bias etc, and tend to carry it everywhere, instead of ranting on TRL.com like I sometimes do.
Some decent union fans haunt there, a couple of trolls, but some folks who discuss both codes, disparity of coverage, media perception of "That Northern Game" etc.
Vichy is taboo, though.

Fuck me! I know very little about sport and don't watch much rugby anyway but you're telling me that, apart from letting Goodwin go with a £6/7/8 00,000 pension, the last Labour government has given away another 20 million to a game of kick and mess about. It's no wonder we're effing broke.
p.s.I'd give you some stars for your sub, if I knew what it was on about.

I very good game of union can almost match a bad league game.IMO.
It's all personal taste, all folks are different, and heritage can play a big part, especially where you are brung up.
IIRC RBS signed a new 5 yr £20m deal just after being bailed out....

That may be so, me old pal,me old beauty, but you can't deny that a good game of Union is far more enjoyable than any game of league.
(I think RBS is under contract for the sponsorship thing, which isn't likely to last much longer)

This isn't exctly the right place for such a discussion, but to a degree, yeah, I think there is an "inverted snobbery" regarding the "toffs" version of rugby, especially after the hundred or so year's of "sporting Apartheid" we suffered from above, it's not really surprising, though , is it.
Today's "free gangway"?, my Arse, it still goes on, maybe I'm just in a bad area.
However, the "tax-payer" sponsored element reamins.
RBS is owned by the tax-payer, yet sponsors the 5 nations (plus Italy) goal kick-a-thon.
I don't want any of my money going to that, but I get no choice.
What I also despise is the false claiming of record crowds for rugby matches, all of which are over 30k behind the record gate for a game of rugby, or claiming a first for a venue, 25 years after Wigan played rugby there.
Etc, etc, etc.

However, at least I watch a sport whereby I know the injuries are real, the blood is real, the salary cap exists, and isn't a corrupt, morally offensive sport dependant on rather iffy sponsorship.
It's also a sport that leads the way in rule changes, which then get copied to improve lesser games, such as the one you prefer.
Although the Webb-Ellis story is most likely a myth, it's worth remembering he was from Salford.

 Each to his own.
Yours,
Inverted Snob No.3374

You're sounding like an inverted snob, Mr 33 and a bit, if the expression's still in use.
I noticed several months ago the term passive/aggressive kept coming up in conversions on here, a term I hadn't used since I last lived in the crappy capital, in about'75. Strange how the centre of the universe is very conservative in its ways.

No Ram, I watched NZ beat the Aussies real rugby side in the 4 N final.
Superb game, and proof you can beat the Aussies in their own back yard even when they have their own ref.
You want me to try to stay awake during a Union match, you got to pay me a lot and provide the drinks, assuming I'd agree to watch that tax-payer sponsored public school-boy crap anyway, which, tbh, is a fucking big ask of a guy with principles.

Hope you watched the England v Oz match last week, 33. What real rugby is all about. Still available on BB2 till tomorrow.
There again, if they can find highlights of Scotland v SA, I wouldn't bother.
