Science superstar Professor Brian Cox has admitted that after years of study he still cannot work out if clocks go backwards or forwards at the beginning of Summertime in the UK.

Suspicions about the celebrity particle physicist’s grasp of the British Summertime concept grew on Sunday when he arrived two hours late for a screening of his hit TV science series ‘The Wonders of the Solar System’.

Quizzed by security staff at BBC Television Centre, the author of ‘Why Does E=mc²?’ eventually confessed that he had adjusted his alarm clock the wrong way.

Last year, concern about Cox’s time-keeping was voiced by colleagues when he was three hours late for a crucial meeting at the headquarters of CERN in Geneva, location of the Large Hadron Collider.

The professor, who works at CERN on the project to find the origins of the Universe by replicating the Big Bang, blamed flight delays.

But today he confirmed through his representative Sue Rider that he ‘just doesn’t get the whole clocks-going-backwards-and-forward business’.

In a statement, the shamed ‘rockstar physicist’ said: “It’s just beyond me. I mean, it’s dark and it’s raining but officially it’s Summertime, apparently. Then, on a nice Autumn day, it’s Winter. What’s that all about?’.

Professor Cox is likely to face demands for him to step down from his positions with several of the world’s leading scientific bodies.

The controversy echoes the row that shook the science world four years ago when Professor Stephen Hawking said that he is now convinced that the planet Mars is only three miles from Earth and is the size of a golf ball.
