I went to a college re-union with a mate once.
I never actually attended the college at any time. All the same it was amazing just how many people vaguely remembered me, some remembered really liking me and others assured me I’d hardly changed.
If life has been ultra successful you won’t be interested - but if you are an abject failure then you have to go on the off chance there will be an even bigger loser than you.
Decision time.

Make sure you stalk them all on Facebook first and try and remember a random fact about each of them, or their close family. Then when you want to end a conversation, you can just look them in the eye and say "and how was your weekend in Cambridge last month?" or "how is your wife's disabled cousin these days?", flash an evil smile and walk away.

I'm not sure my old school has reunions except when we do time adjacently.

I prefer to find out about my old class-mates by their Friends Reunited pages (for what they were up to 5 years ago) and the contents of their rubbish bins for more up-to-date stuff.

No reunions. Ever. I went to a very strict high school. The most pathetic thing was when young men in the first year of college would return to visit us at school with long hair and facial hair. I expect they were trying to show us how fast and liberated they were. They were just (oh, did I say that already?) pathetic.

People I know seem to have enjoyed them.

On a personal note, I have zero interest in what people are up to.

I'd say go as long as you can either take a friend, or know that a college friend with whom you are still in contact will be there.

I went to my school reunion last year. At first, I really wasn't sure about going, especially as the girls who made my life a living hell for a few years were going to be there.

I went along with a someone who, while now a friend, I hated at school, and had a great time.

Turns out the horrible girls are still horrible, but I was completely able to deal with them now, especially as without exception, they were all hugely overweight, looked 20 yrs older than me, and were clearly unhappy with the way their lives had turned out.

One of my best mates came down from Aberdeen after his work, having finished work at midnight just to join me in laughing at some of them. Infantile I know, but it was worth it to have defeated the demons.

I'm now back in contact with a whole bunch of people, including one dear friend who I hadn't seen since she moved abroad at 14, so I'd definitely recommend it.

PS Be prepared for the the disturbing sight of all the hot guys now being fat, middle-aged and balding.

I always enjoy them. As you get older, the petty differences that loomed so large when you were a student are trivial and you can appreciate all of your contemporaries a bit better (yeah, right, there are exceptions to the rule).

I've tended to find the mega-successful people and the complete disasters rarely turn up, it's full of those bumbling along in the middle, who are mostly OK. At the end of the day, even if it's crap, what have you lost? Just one Saturday night out.

Dear Auntie NewsBiscuit,

Have been invited to my first reunion type thing, and I don't know whether it will be shite or not. Are they fun? Is it worth dragging myself a few hundred miles up country to see people who ten years ago were the epitome of Frankie Boyle's definition of students - 'daft middle class cunts'?

Also, exactly how much does one lie about one's post-uni life at these things? Shall I claim merely to be in middle management or something equally plausible or go for broke and say that I'm the Pope?

Thank you for your help at this confusing time,

shitsu
