Plans by Sir Andrew Motion to write a sequel to the adventure story Treasure Island have been put on hold due to 'unforeseen circumstances beyond our control.' said publishers Long John and Silvers.
The idea was shelved when surviving characters from the original series returned to Treasure Island only to find it had been sold to a Bahamas based property developer and was now an exclusive gated community beach resort for retired American bankers.
The project had been beset with problems from the start.
Finding Jim Hawkins Snr, hero of the original book had not proved easy for Sir Andrew but an online advert placed in 'Private Eye-Patch' magazine was to prove significant in his search.
Hawkins Snr, who had retired as cabin boy soon after the final paragraph ended in the original book was finally tracked down to a sheep farm in New South Wales where he had settled along with childhood sweetheart, Sally.
But the chance of putting the gang together for one last heist had proved irresistible for the old sea dog, now 142 years old. When he received the invitation from Sir Andrew for a return to Treasure Island there was no way he could resist.
However, exuberant excitement soon turned to deep despair for Hawkins Snr on his return to the island.
The blue lagoon paradise where they had been washed ashore all those years ago was now a harbour full of ocean going liners, yachts and speedboats.
The place where the treasure was buried, now a drive thru' IHOP and an eight lane super-hiway snaked its way through what was once a tropical rain forest.
Dreams had been shattered, memories lay in ruins for the ageing adventurer.
The only positive to come out of the visit for Hawkins was to be reunited with someone he hadn't seen in over 150 years.
Ben Gunn, had returned to the island years ago and was now happily shacked up with a 19 year old Phillipino ladyboy who spoon fed him cheese 'n chocolate ice cream all day long.
'It was good to see the old dog again' said a tearful Hawkins 'he's hardly changed, didn't look a day over 187 but I should never have come back.
I think this Motion picture will be a disaster.’
