The Pilsbury Anorexics Operatic Society’s gala opening night performance of Gotterdammerung ended in chaos last night when no-one could tell whether or not the show was over.

Audience member Mrs Brenda Miggins summed up the mood. “It was a travesty. Brunhilde was a size 6 teenage waif of a thing. She could hardly hold her shield, and they didn’t even bother with padding. We already have to concentrate hard in order to remember not to clap in the middle, how are we supposed to know when the end has arrived if there’s no overweight soprano to put us right? “

Society spokesman Dick Smee countered “In these enlightened times audiences must accept that outdated preconceptions have to be cast aside. It’s no longer acceptable in this day and age to ask a thin actor to ‘fat up’ for a role.
