Consumer groups have reacted furiously to a leaked Treasury email confirming that a windfall tax on déjà vu will be announced in this week’s budget. The move would allow Alistair Darling to cream off an estimated £3.5billion from the current boom with a tax that avoids alienating younger voters.
“The sight of Hoon, Hewitt and Byers promising access for cash is just the latest episode which has led to a massive surge in déjà vu across the country.” Explained Alan Corduroy of WHICH. “The wholesale replaying of footage of Neil Hamilton and Mohammed al Fayed and that Aitken bloke all fuels the déjà vu boom; but it’s consumers over thirty who will bear the brunt of the tax.”
For older voters who have seen the value of their homes slashed by the recession and already worried about the future costs of care and inheritance tax, the déjà vu boom had provided a lifeline and news of the proposed windfall tax has been met with disbelief. The reaction of eighty five year old Maurice Levinson, recently forced to sell his house to pay for his Chorley residential home, is typical. “My father worked hard all his life and when he had to sell his house to pay for his care he said all he had left was his memories.” Explained his son Bernard. “Now it looks like the government is going to take those too.”
There was no confirmation from the Treasury today about the proposed tax. “There have been rumours about a windfall tax on déjà vu for a long time.” A spokesman told us. “Frankly, we’ve been here before.”
