@Wallster - thanks for the comments and to "meet me half way".

@Mary - Oops...you're quite right. I just assumed it was about Fergiegate...and you know what happens when you "assume", don't you? You can reach erroneous conclusions and make a tit of yourself.

Edward - thanks for the shout out.
Wally - I think you should be NB's official peace envoy, what a lovely chap you are.
Fergie - it's not all about you, dear. The 'clique' is a recurring theme around here, so neither blame nor flatter yourself that you have broken new ground with it.

I am dreadfully bored of all this now. Can we all go back to being funny please? Or maybe start being funny for some of us...

Dear Fergie,

Please don't cock off. I for one don't believe you're Plucky. Your writing style is far too outwardly focused for that.

Secondly, I think you're quite brave to step up and write these things, although I have to say that in any social group, you're more likely to change things from the inside. By that I mean join in and write stuff in the style you'd like to see more of. If it works and people see that it's successful and popular, then that'll become the new bandwagon upon which people will jump, and which others will eventually start to complain about as being too staid and mainstream. You can't help that, but if people keep subbing stuff with fresh perspectives on the old theme, then it keeps things moving along nicely.

Don't aim for stars and high praise, aim for funny. That'll make you more successful than anything else around here. Darkbill is a superb example of someone who lets their writing do all their talking.

Thirdly, is there any chance at all of you posting some pics of your humps, your humps, your lovely lady lumps?

(I missed the video and well, you have to ask).

There IS a house style, or whatever you want to call it, Fergie, because the ed is arbiter. But he's picking from the subs available here. So if those are not to your taste, give him a wider choice.

What pees me off is my writing partner subbed at my suggestion and made FP first go. But was so upset at being edited that he won't do it again.

I really don't want to stoke up another chat room spat, but this refutes an accusation I didn't make.

I wish I hadn't used the word 'clique' - perhaps "group of established active/vocal chat-room/writers room contributors" woulda been more accurate. In the pisstake sub, I called them "alpha-contributors"

The point of the original sub - which was a pisstake where a grain of truth was extrapolated to riduculous proportions for comic effect (and therefore not a complaint as such) - was that several phenomena in NB could create an echo chamber/feedback effect that drove subs to a norm.

You had the temporary religious theme [3 FPs in 4 days, then a NiB], you had the recurring meme thang [one too many vuvuzelas], and you had the subs-board chorus/popularity effect that could lead people to normalise their subs to fit in more easily. We all like stars, we all like compliments, and they are given by this group of established active/vocal chat-room/writers room contributors.

The point that the pisstake sub turned on was "what if a new contributor - Pistache2010 - tried to design the ultimate sub - what if all these feedback loops resulted in the perfect storm NB sub". And the sub reporting the perfect storm sub itself was written in a consciously conformist NiB style. That was the "joke".

But in explaining the "joke", I used the word "clique" and people thought I was implying favouritism and malicious exclusion. I never made that allegation, I explicitly stated that I was not implying malice / exclusion - I was talking about how an established culture could enable stasis - but the main thrust of the outrage seemed to be around that allegation that people chose to imagine.

What is more, the resulting chat-room discussion confirmed what I already knew - that no such malice exists, and that the NB chat-rooms are an exemplar of open minded mature discussion.

So no need to enter evidence to show new writers / new IDs getting FPs and NiBs - I wasn't implying that the door was closed to new writers.

Love it.
That is fantastic.
A true test of worth/worthiness passed with flying colours (oopps - am I starting to sound a bit creepy)
I love the idea of multiple names.
It really does floor any accusations of cliques/favouritism etc
I know others post under several names...others regard it as the work of the devil.
Nobody is right and nobody is wrong.
But it does prove a blindingly obvious point
well done that girl

Lord Lucan on "Mandy insists Cabinet take out Insurance for fear of dangerous PM"

Following the furore over dog insurance in the quite extraordinary belief that it will lead to a safer society, The Spin Master General, Peter Mandyson, announced this morning that "in a veiled attempt to appeal to the Daily Mail reading, hysterical masses of our beloved middle England, the Cabinet will, forthwith, insure the Prime Minister."

Mandy reassured the chosen media that, "whilst Gordon is normally a placid creature and has never man handled a soul, we have taken out a comprehensive insurance policy as a precaution. Should the PM unexpectedly change his genial characteristic traits and visciously maul a member of the public (or, indeed, a Cabinet colleague) the premium will pay handsome dividends."
