Instead of taking us for mugs, can I suggest a poll for contributors to decide what we should be rewarded with for our valuable time, wit and wisdom (all except for SaddamHusseinAlTikriti who I suspect is a ghost writer).

I shall start off with the choice of Green Shield Stamps or Pink Stamps as a reward, as I have several not quite complete books of each, which according to the catalogue, I can redeem for one of those nice lamps filled with coloured wax which flows up & down when hot and would look grand illuminating the three flying ducks on the wall of my drawing room.

Any other suggestions?

Gotten is rotten; forgotten is worse,
Usage annoys where apt use would be terse,
Tack a syllable here, thrust a malaprop there:
Doing house-calls, pedants should be clearing the air.

But is 'ize v ise' really worth getting worked up about? (Or even 'yze v yse'.) Both are valid, and if anything it's English English that has changed.

What I hate is the way 'got' has gone from using 'to have' to 'to do', as in "Have you got a pen?" "Yes I do." I blame the telly, because proper American authors don't write like that.

*

If you’re suffering from writer’s block and can’t be arsed with chit-chat, yet somehow cannot drag yourself away from NB/forum, then do as I do and play Blue Box for hours on end!

You can spin it at random with a quick mouse-over or indulge in any number of more specialised Blue Box activities. For example, pick a tag and do you best to get it in the centre (tip: the tags spin in the opposite direction to your mouse!) then take your mouse away to leave your chosen tag hovering steadily in the middle of the box. Sounds easy?

Blue Box is so versatile, you can invent your own games and your own rules of play. You could pick a tag as your ‘centre target tag’, but you’re only being allowed to touch the box in the corners with your mouse pointer. Now there’s a challenge!

Another game is to spin the box and memorise as many tags as you can. When it stops spinning, open Word (or Excel if you’re really organised) and type out all the tags you can remember (or think you can remember!)

Remember – everyone’s Blue Box is personal to them, thanks to the power of Lava (or whatever it’s called), so multiple-player solo games can all be played simultaneously and at the same time without anything to do with each other. Marvellous! Best of all, it can be played one-handed, so if you’ve recently broken your shoulder, for example, you can still join in the fun.

Rumour has it there’ll be a special edition Blue Box Xbox out by Christmas!

* Image for illustration purposes (like they usually are). The real Blue Box is on the main page. Have fun and watch out for RSI.
