Episode two is much better than the first. Somewhat savage attack on the BBC: I can see why they got their retaliation in first...

Blandings was a bit of a disappointment - Wodehouse has been (under)played to a tee in the past.

Hmmm. I didn't like the new Yes Prime Minister much. It had the feel of am dram; as if the actors were delivering their lines and then standing aside to allow the audience to guffaw. It just didn't work for me at all.

On the other hand I quite liked the gently inoffensive Blandings. I knew that episode having listened to it in the car a couple of years ago while waiting (would you beleive it) to get on the Isle of Wight ferry back to the mainland. The story had been changed for TV to place it all in Blandings but other than that a nice piece of cosy whimsy IMHO.

It was disappointing, but OK (say B+). The ghost of that Nigel bloke who later played George III haunted the whole proceedings.

Not half as disappointing as the BBC's very own highly hyped Blandings. Wodehouse doesn't need to be hammed up in such an exaggerated way - the daft plots, situations and the language do it already. See Fry & Laurie's still brilliant Jeeves & Wooster.

It will take time to get used to the new characters - the last lot still burn strongly in the memory.
Hard act to follow but showed promise.
They should ditch the canned laughter though - I think audiences have moved beyond that now. We're all grown up now.
Let the jokes and farcical situations speak for themselves.

Bum sex: you married guys usually develop a curiosity for bum sex as you get older. You lot appear to have skipped a decade or two.

Wayland:
Just watched it, it's pretty good. Some good gags, but not all that polished.

Just watched it, it's pretty good. Some good gags, but not all that polished. But it does seem to have quite a dig at the way BBC news creates it's own headlines with 'trap' questions in interviews (e.g. the PM is asked 'is chairing the European negotiations like being on the Titanic?', then the headline news is 'PM denies he's the captain of the Titanic'. Joke was better written than that but you get the idea.)

There was a cracking gag at the beginning where a reporter live at the scene reports exactly what's going on in front of her as a prediction of what is expected to happen shortly.

DC: I've never had bum sex; am I missing out? I see it in a lot of pornography and it all seems like fun, plus I have a few gay friends and they seem happy enough. Apart from the two who are in a long term relationship, but in some ways I think that may have more to do with the lack of sex (bum or otherwise) that accompanies being with the same partner for ages.

Anyway. Bum sex.

Seems about as likely to succeed as another series of Fawlty Towers. Haven't seen it yet, but the clips weren't great, and if that's the new series at it's best it doesn't look too promising.

The BBC's James Landale actually seems to criticise it for being 'more comedy than documentary'. There's also quite a sniffy acknowledgement that the show 'would make one laugh'.

Absolutely unforgivable errors for a comedy show in this day and age.But for me, it lacked bum sex.

Hmm. Just read the Telegraph review and, to my utter surprise, this new series is penned by the original writers; Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn. I'd just assumed that it was the old show's fascia, but ‘paid tribute to’ by different people. Might actually decide to give it a go then, despite the trailers.

Haven't seen it yet.

I have quite enjoyed Ripper street, though the first episode was awful, the second and third were good. I commonly visit the comedy section of the iplayer and nearly always leave again disappointed.

Has anyone here seen it? I haven't but, I have to admit, it did look terrible from the promo clips and the billboard at my local station:

"Do we need all this spin? It's making me dizzy."

"Yes, Prime Minister."

Really?

Still, there is a chance they only showed the most 'unchallenging' bits in the promo material so as not to alienate the enormous ‘lowest common denominator’ demographic.

So the BBC missed the opportunity to screen a new series of Yes, Prime Minister. Imagine how pleased they must have been to report that it was 'panned by critics':

boo, it's shit

The article says the Independent slammed it, but it didn't. It just reported that others had criticised it. In fact much of the BBC article is lifted straight from the Independent round-up:

boo, someone else said it was shit

So, the BBC was a bit disingenuous to say the Independent hated it, but it does sound like some others hated it instead. So who were they?

The Radio Times, who are associated with the BBC. The Guardian, who are the political wing of the BBC. And an obscure website.

So the BBC slagged the programme off in its magazine, a newspaper reported that the BBC had slagged it off, and then the BBC reported it as 'news' that several sources had hated it.

The Telegraph quite liked it, so did a few other sites. Some criticised it for not acknowledging 'the thick of it', presumably because they're now so used to the BBC constantly cross-referencing any new output to give the impression it's not all tired repeats.

Reporting the opinions of TV critics as 'news' in this way comes across as a bit 'sour grapes' by the BBC. Frankly, I think it stinks.

Grrr. Had to get that of my chest.

The second episode of Ripper Street was much better than the first, though. It shows they can still manage to make the odd thing that's watchable, rather than just jealously slagging off things they completely fucked up on.

Did they ever manage to report how good Sky's 'Moone Boy' was? I guess they forgot. Probably a busy news day.
