Story about a Somerset rugby team arriving at a flashy-looking venue for a game. The captain approaches the blazered man on the door, explains who they are and then says, "Where's the changing rooms to?"
"Did no-one teach you not to end a sentence with a preposition?" came the posh bloke's reply.
"Sorry, I'll re-phrase it," says the captain. "Where's the changing rooms to, tosser?"

Infinitives - anorak note:

The infinitive form of a verb, such as "swim", is "to swim".

It is argued by some that this phrase, which is just one particular form of the verb, is effectively all one word and should not be split, any more than one would write "sw [insert some extra words here] imming", and that when you split an infinitive the isolated word "to" has no grammatical legitimacy on its own.

There is also a view that to split an infinitive in thie way also leads to rather clumsy English.

However there is not a "rule" about this; it is much more a matter of preference, good style and preferred usage. Those who claim that there is a rigid rule about it and that spliting an infinitive is always definitely "wrong" are actually betraying their own ignorance - challenge them to find an authoritative source for their assertion! As they say, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

Perhaps a good guideline is to avoid it and only to split an infinitive when the alternative would sound even more clumsy or if there is some other good reason for doing so.

The classic example, as quoted above, is "to boldly go". Would "To go boldly" or "boldly to go" have the same ring to them? Of course not. Good English is frequently a matter of good style.

(As a further arrogant anorak suggestion: when chooing a word, think about what the word actually means - look it up if neccessary - and consider possible alternatives. "Disintersted" does not mean "un-interested"; "discrete" is a different word from "discreet" and has a quite different meaning; likewise "infer" and "imply" have different meanings and usages. "Fantastic" is ludicrously overworked and of course literally just means "like a fantasy" - in other words, the thing being described does not really exist at all!)

Popular myth. There is no "rule" about not using a preposition to end a sentence with. Nor is there a "rule" about not starting with a conjunction or even to regularly split infinitives. Such things are regarded by many as poor style, bad practice and best avoided where possible, but there is actually no formal "rule" about it.

This is in contrast to clear rules such as those requiring a sentence to start with a capital letter, to contain a verb and to use a full stop to end with. Or simple plural's not to ever contain apostrophe's.

People on social media were bereft with grief today as a musician they didn't know but who was lauded by people they do know died in his or her sleep.

People on Twitter who have a blue tick and present the good radio shows led social media in mourning.

Danielle Gray, 32, marketing officer said, "As soon as I saw that both Huey Morgan and Bob Harris had tweeted an RIP about the same person I had to go on to YouTube and find videos of that person and then do an RIP of my own and post a link to the YouTube video on my timeline.

"I could tell it struck a chord because at least seven people retweeted me. And I was genuinely sad because I think had I known about the dead person before they were dead I would probably have liked their music."

Since the person died earlier today bittorent downloads of their music has rocketed by over 700%.

Pope Benedict XVI - rumored to have quit his vocation as God's chosen earthly servant because of bullying on twitter - has launched 'Papal', an online equivalent to the typical church donation bowl. Users can login and check their existing confessions and submit additional requests for forgiveness, the prices of which vary depending on the sin.

Confessions are then sent to a GOD (Generic Online Devout) for consideration, and hidden in the sites 'My Angel' page, a subscription service is available for serial sinners.

Another interesting feature is the 'Redemption Code', an e-card with a prepaid sin downloaded onto it. Entering the code into the papal website allows sinning up to the value on the card.

"My wife got me one for Valentines, topped up with £200. Think of all the things I could do! I could file my taxes wrong four times, not pay for a mars bar twice, or sleep with her sister once. I think I'm going to choose the latter", explained a jubilant ex News Of The World reporter.

The Vatican has remained quiet on the new service, but an exclusive source has suggested the 'iGod' - a virtual WWJD device that provides advice in times of hardship via additional DLCs (Dowloadable Link to Cardinals), due to be released this summer - could detect sins such as texting someone other than your wife and listening to Justin Beiber, and automatically send money to God.

Quite how the last bit works, the pope has openly explained. Unfortunately, it was in Latin, which only Latin teachers understand. We were, however, informed that the total £500,000 to be processed by the site so far has nothing to do with the £500,000 net child molestation court costs incurred by the religion's priests.

The service was launched in the Pope's last tweet: 'Redeem urself online FTW! #imthepope #YOLO-ETERNAL' in an effort to attract younger audiences. Child Protection have been informed.

Well-known non-paedophile, Lord McAlpine, is to check inside the brain of all UK residents for any thoughts that he’s a kiddy-fiddler, and then financially ruin them, his solicitor Andrew Reid announced today.

“Lord McAlpine has already made known that he plans to destroy everybody who named him on Twitter, but we feel this doesn’t go far enough,” said Reid. “That’s why we’ve also extended our campaign to include anyone who read the offending tweets, even if they immediately forgot them, as well as anyone who can spell the word Twitter.”

“We already have software that is scanning the rest of the internet for any mention of his Lordship, including anagrams of his name and this has already led to writs against Countdown and the late Richard Whiteley, but from today onwards we will also be using a Think-o-Tron 3000 Brainwave Scanner which can electromagnetically read the innermost thoughts of everyone in the mainland UK (except Nadine Dorries, who just makes it omit an unpleasant whine).

Asked whether he thought Lord McAlpine’s campaign to hunt down and punish the entire population was terrifyingly Kafka-esque, Reid replied, “We know where you live.”

Free speech was unavailable for comment.

Lord Vader, keeper of the dark side, today announced he has been talking to his lawyers about suing over 10,000 users of the social network site Twitter for claims he may have inappropriately touched a protocol droid that he built when he was a young lad.

He has already tried hard to clamp down on the allegations by killing hundreds of Bothans who had been trying to get a message to the rebellion but the rumours got through. Some people have speculated that his harsh treatment of the Bothans may actually be a sign of guilt. Something Lord Vader has strenuously denied.

“Yes I may have completely destroyed a planet once in cold blood, but interfering with a protocol droid? That’s an accusation that is completely false and without any basis, people have gone too far!”

Most twitter users will be expected to pay a nominal fee to Lord Vaders favourite charity, Fathers 4 Justice, a charity who he’d worked close with to try and gain him access to his twins, one of whom was housed pretty much under his nose with Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru.

But stronger users of Twitter may be forced to fight him like a man to the death and with every passing moment they’ll be punished by moving closer to the dark side.

Duff on "Daily Mail Jibe Sees Fry Set To Quit Twitter Yet Again"

Racist homophobes' newspaper of choice, The Daily Mail, is at the centre of yet more Twitter outrage today, after it suggested in an article that the uncrowned King of the microblogging site, Stephen Fry, is in fact rather boring when tweeting.

In a scathing piece it slammed many of the popular celebrity's 'tweets' as being inane and pointless, and went on to say that it was "a wonder his followers didn't die from sheer tedium and abject boredom when reading his timeline". To illustrate its point it quotes one of Fry's tweets in particular:

Oh bums and fishooks! M'chum Hugh Laurie's on Later With Jools Holland and I'm busy doing a voiceover for Waitrose. Damn it to hell!

At first it was thought that Fry hadn't spotted the criticism, or else if he had then he was simply going to ignore it, but then sensationally at 3.00am yesterday morning, and plainly smarting and deeply wounded by its content, he tweeted this to his three million plus followers:

Gah! I'm fed up with this constant getting at me and sadly m'chums, I think I must delete my account. Meh!

But users of social networking site soon came to the hoity-toity funnyman's defence, and in no time at all they had the hashtag #DailyMailisShite trending across the world. One Tweeter, @Sadknobend, summed up the mood in this tweet:

Stephen you're really fab and we all love you. Please don't leave Stephen, please...! #DailyMailisShite

It's understood that the Oscar Wilde-playing Thespian cum Quiz-master was only persuaded to remain on the site by the support and loyalty of his legions of followers. He later tweeted:

So touched by all your wonderful love and best wishes. Am deeply humbled. :-) #DailyMailisShite

Another tweeter who asked for their identity to be kept secret said. "Stephen's great, and following him really makes me feel that there is actually some kind of one-to-one connection between us. Like I know if I was ever in a fix, say maybe I owed money to loan sharks or something like that, then all I would have to do is DM (Direct Message) Stephen and I could be sure of some help and support. No doubt in my mind whatsoever."
