Jedi knights have expressed anger at plans to phase out traditional lightsabers in favour of new, more environmentally friendly models.

‘These new lightsabers are rubbish,’ complained Jedi Master Obi Wan Kenobi. ‘They take ages to light up and when they do you can barely see anything with them.’

The energy saving directive has been issued by so-called ‘Galactic bureaucrats’ and is seen by Jedis as particularly galling since many of their enemies on the dark side have so far refused to sign up.

‘What’s the use in having an environmentally friendly lightsaber,’ asked Kenobi, ‘when Sith Lord Darth Maul can still prance about with his energy guzzling double headed model? And don’t get me started on his carbon footprint. Have you seen his airmiles?’

‘I refuse to switch to these new low energy sabers,’ said a typically petulant Luke Skywalker. ‘By the time they’ve reached full brightness you may have already had your hand chopped off by a man you didn’t even realise was your own father.’

However, intergalactic environmentalist George Monbiot disagrees: ‘The old lightsabers may look impressive but they are very energy inefficient. Jedis need to appreciate that The Force is a finite resource and that we need to conserve it, at least until we develop environmentally sustainable solar wind farms.’

To avoid the ban many Jedis are already stocking up on the old style sabers. ‘Sales have gone through the roof,’ said saber merchant Jabba the Hutt, ‘as have many of the Jedis when they refuse to pay my exorbitant asking price.’

The directive is the latest in a long line of new rules and regulations emanating from The Galactic Republic. ‘Only last month they ordered us to fit all our equipment with silencers,’ whined Kenobi. ‘It doesn’t make saving the universe any easier when you also have to run around humming your own lightsaber noise. And while we’re on the subject, I absolutely refuse to move over to Imperial.’

‘Political correctness gone mad, it is,’ added Jedi Grand Master Yoda. ‘Environmentally friendly we must be, but green I am already.’

In an expected move, several major European banks have suspended discussions on the future of the Euro to consider the addition of the word "Noooooo" to the Blue Ray release of Star Wars. Josef Ackermann, CEO of Deutsche Bank, explained that the change represented such a significant change to the Star Wars genre that several leading bankers have had to engage professional councillors.

Talks are expected to resume by 2023.

An online discussion forum today reached a unanimous and well reasoned conclusion following a week long debate among participants.

The debate, focusing on a highly charged political and economic issue, was described by one blogger as "a rich learning experience for all concerned, in which we all began to understand a little of the magnitude of our own comparative ignorance".

Against all the odds, the contributors cast aside the meaningless pedantry, petty name calling and violent sexual imagery which has been the hallmark of web-forums over the past fifteen years, and instead made well researched and logical arguments surrounding the key issue. Their hypotheses were duly weighed and a conclusion agreed upon which met with the agreement of all concerned. Policy-makers and opinion formers are now studying the outworkings of the debate carefully with view to immediately putting its findings into practice.

Those taking part in the debate paid tribute to their adversaries and expressed sincere hopes that the incisive dissection of their opponents' arguments was not mistaken for personal animosity amid the cut and thrust of debate.

Scientists have described the odds of a recurrence of the internet phenomenon as 'one in a million'. This was borne out by subsequent threads on the same forum, variously entitled "What are you looking at, dickhead?" and "Star Wars Continuity Errors - Part 87".

The hosts of themed fancy dress parties could be unwittingly discriminating against less creative and imaginative people, who are statistically less likely to turn up wearing a decent costume, a recent study has concluded.

Research carried out on behalf of the Equality and Human Rights Commission revealed that a large proportion of the British public feel 'a palpable sense if dread' when invited to fancy dress parties: 'Most people simply do not have the time and money to invest in knocking up a Buzz Lightyear outfit out of cereal boxes and plastic containers for example; their creative abilities notwithstanding.'

'Researchers interviewed over 13,000 married couples, many of whom told the same harrowing story,' Baroness Margaret Prosser of Battersea OBE, deputy chair of the commission, revealed. 'The pressure to concoct a realistic costume that is also witty and clever in its interpretation is immense. Statistics have proved that even the minimum standard Charlie Chaplin moustache is beyond most people.'

Mr. and Mrs. B of Nantwich is a case in point. 'Our neighbour invited us to a Star Wars themed party a while ago - it was terrible. The lengths some people went to - a full length Wookie costume, a brightly burnished C3P0 and some guy done up like Darth Maul, spikes and all. And then there was us: my 'Han Solo' husband in his work shirt, trousers and a black leather waistcoat from his Quo days which wouldn't even do up any more; and me in my brown 'Jedi' dressing gown - I felt a right fool!'

To combat this problem, the Equality and Human Rights Commission has announced a series of roadshows, designed to encourage party organisers to think about the needs of those less fortunate than themselves and include a non-dress up option on their invitations. The Commission will also be distributing fancy dress information packs - full of useful hints, tips and cut-out fake noses for the budding, if inept, costume creator. The precise contents of this pack will be unveiled next month at the EHRC's annual summer ball - theme: the Baroque Court of The Sun King, Louis XIV.

The Empire is still reeling after the Emperor launched a a full scale inquiry into the effectiveness and capabilities of his army of Imperial Stormtroopers.

While admitting the destruction of Alderon was a success, Darth Vader, the Emperor's right hand man told reporters that appears to have been a one-off.

"Our ground forces were not involved in the destruction of Alderon, that was purely a Naval matter." Lord Vader said, breathing heavily throughout the news conference.

"What has become plain is that the Army is just not up to scratch. Whether that's down to the training or the equipment, will be investigated by the inquiry under Lord Hutton."

Equipment has long been a subject of complaint by Stormtroopers. They say their laser rifles are inaccurate and lack the kill-power of those used by the Rebels.

News footage and daily body counts indicate that while some Stormtroopers manage to kill or severely wound members of the Rebellion, the vast majority are using weapons that are either badly calibrated or just plain useless.

Lord Hutton is expected to start taking evidence for his inquiry aboard a newly finished Death Star in the summer.

BAE Systems, which makes the majority of the equipment used by the Empire, refused to comment on the investigation.
