Nothing specific. Personally don't need a course to start stand up because I already do it. Was just musing and wondering if people found them beneficial.

I’m going to start giving more detailed feedback. Instead of just saying “Very good” I’ll say “Very good, I liked the bit with the words that made me laugh. The words that didn’t make me laugh weren’t quite so good, but still added to the overall piece so were a worthwhile addition.”. And if I don’t like something, instead of ignoring it I’ll give it 1* and some abusive tags.

You're going to START doing this? How will we tell?

Writing technique I am sure can be taught but you need the funny ideas in the first place. With stand-up I think most aspiring comics copy their comedy heroes to start with and then try to evolve their own style over a period of time. Posting on here at least gives you some feedback but don't worry if your postings sometime fall off the bottom of the page without comment it happens to everyone.

You should be able to get some honest feedback on NB, but generally you don’t. People avoid giving what is meant to be constructive criticism because some people don’t want it, and spit their dummy out when they are given it.

You should also be able to post a sub and have people suggest additions/alterations to make the writing process much more collaborative. I’m sure a lot of people have got half thought out ideas that they are struggling to finish, why not post them in the chat room and see what fellow biscuits can add to them?

Or just pad them out a bit and tag a half-arsed punchline on, you know, whatever suits you best.

I have some story ideas written down that I either haven’t got around to writing up or don’t have enough material for. I might start trying to encourage collaboration by posting one of them for people to add to and then sulk when everybody ignores it.

I did a stand-up workshop with Tony Allen (the 'godfather of alternative comedy'), and another with Linda Smith (in Sheffield, before she was well-known). Both great fun, and I followed up by doing a few stand-up slots: terrifying but life-affirming. Ten minutes can seem like a lifetime... though the sound of laughter (laughter that you've created...) is intoxicating.

The best workshop was with Jonathan Kay, 'the Fool'... not quite stand-up, but fascinating. I remember seeing him at Glastonbury, working with crowds big and small... and I realised I badly wanted to know some of the things he knew.

That's where NB should be at its best. You can post something and should be able to get some honest feedback. Sometimes I find things in my head are hilarious then on here they die a death, but you don't know until you post

Any more books recommended on writing comedy that would help with the process on NB? What I find difficult is the construction of a piece of comedy writing after conceiving the original idea.

Most of the time I can't decide whether the idea will work and abandon it, because I have no real idea whether something that appeals to me will appeal (or appal) a larger audience than the voices in my head.

I think you can. I think there are those that are naturally funny, but I think people can be taught.

I think it is about learning what works and what doesn't. A good joke will follow basic rules. On here most FP length subs are lots if jokes that revolve around the main joke.. So if you can learn to write jokes around one subject then you can write some good stuff. But even then it can be hit or miss. A great book on joke writing is this by Sally Holloway . I know that some pro comedians and writers reference it to help kill writers block and would highly recommend for anyone who enjoys writing comedy

This chaps thinks so. Santa gave me this at Christmas and I've been dipping in and out of it, playing around with the exercises and having a read. It's certainly explained a few things and I now write a little faster and with more confidence because it teaches you ways of approaching writing that are easy to turn on and off.

Worth a look, I'd say: http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Cheeky-Monkey-Tim-Ferguson/dp/0868198617

Anyone ever done an actual comedy course? A whole teaching industry has sprung up around comedy, especially stand up, that even ten years ago didn't exist. Has anyone here paid to be made more amusing?
