MoB, you work in Westminster...
You are David Cameron, and I claim my five pounds.
Which no doubt you will find a means to tax me on.

I was brought up in Hammersmith, also lived in Kensington, many many years ago. Moved to Cornwall 4years ago. delighted with our decision, as are the nippers

I'm afraid the path to sympathy seldom approaches my door.

Ironduke that was uncalled for! I was looking for sympathy. I do love Cornwall but I love London too. I work in Westminster so have the best of the big smoke at my feet on a daily basis. Kernow it ain't but it is beautiful nonetheless.

Where do you live? I know that part of Cornwall very well.

Renzo: That pass the Duchy line is great!

BR: It seems like we are both being overly sensitive of each others feeling. You didn't offend me (it'd take a lot more than that!) and you don't think I was being shitty. So we're both happy bunnies.

All this talk of Cornwall is doing my head in! I spent the day in an office block in London, dreaming of Constantine Bay and New Polzeath.

I once ended a difficult relationship by calling the police and having her dragged away in hand-cuffs. When the custody officer asked her nationality she apparently insisted on "Cornish". Although brought up there, her father was a clergyman from Oxford and she lived in London. I flinch and cower whenever I see a “Kernow” flag now. Funny how many you see in England.
As I come from a line of English folk on both sides with no influence from other countries, home or overseas, for at least 10 generations, I am one of those people who cannot take any overt pride in my racial make-up for fear of being called a racist. I may pretend that I’m German.

MoB,
my comment was meant as gentle parody of the romanticised notions that some people have about 'Celtic' nationalism, Cornish nationalism being just one example. As the son of an Irish Roman Catholic (with a Welsh surname - 'go figure' as our American friend might say) and an Anglo-Scots Protestant I'm only too aware of the absurdity and fundamental stupidity of nationalism, religious bigotry and 'my tribe is better than your tribe' bigotry in general.
No Celts, Saxons, Angles, Jutes, Danes, Romans, Normans, Huguenots, Italians, Germans, Jews, West Indians, Asians or Solomon Islanders were harmed in the making of this post.

Hi all,

I'll address your points in order.

Oxbridge: I am neither casual or racist. A bigot and jingoistic (ironically of course) perhaps, but never racist. Aside form which the Cornish are not a race.

be reasonable : nationalism is never good, just look at Scotland! Interestingly when looking into the background of the Sons of Cornwall I stumbled across an interesting article which makes quite a good argument that “Celts” are an 18th construct and not really a distinct population. A bit of a nightmare for me as I’m a Celt, I have Irish grandparents.

Ironduke: Thanks. I’m annoyed though, I wish I remembered to work “moi luvvver” into the story.

If I’m honest I felt a bit bad writing this! I love Cornwall and I love Rick Stein, actually it’s only really Eric Pickles I’m not a fan off and he gets off pretty lightly!

Careful, MoB,
the Cornish are 'Celts', therefore their nationalism is good; repeat after me, 'Celts good, English bad, Celts good, English bad'. There you go - not difficult is it? Stars.

Rick Stein to own the souls of every Cornish man, woman and child following a “tea-room” deal with the Government

After successfully buying the entire village of Padstow in the early 90s and turning it into Cornwall’s leading tourist attraction, Padstein, Rick Stein, Birds Eye’s top chef, has today announced he has bought the souls of every Cornish citizen in a deal estimated to be worth £1.

Eric Pickles, Secretary of State for Communities, Local Government and Morbid Obesity commented on the deal: “Rick made us an offer we couldn’t refuse. The Government and the electorate are gut sick of the Cornish leeching tens of millions of tax from hardworking English families, only to hear them piss and moan about tourism – their main export and sole source of revenue after pasties and casual racism. He now owns the Cornish lock stock and barrel and he’s welcome the sun addled ingrates. He can drive them in to the sea at Penzance or send them all down tin mines for all I care.”

Pickles: “The Cornish I can take or leave, Cornish cream teas on the other hand…”

Rick Stein, fish and chip shop owner and celebrity manic depressive, said: “I love Cornwall with all my heart but what I love more is finding ways of exploiting Cornwall for commercial gain. Now I own the Cornish the opportunities are endless, we are looking into the possibility of selling them to tourists as pets, if we can manage to get them house trained.”

The deal is not without its critics, Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, net curtain shirted painter and decorator has been the most vocal. The pair fell out after he distorted the local housing market in Port Isaac by buying 11 fishermen's cottages to keep his shirts and velvet jackets in and then, in a move resisted by the fishy locals, bought the village outright as the ultimate "post post-modern sculpture".

Commenting on Stein’s latest move Llewelyn-Bowen said: "I'm double fucked off about this. It's bad enough he's been trying to get Port Isaac off me and make the impoverished locals, locals I impoverished, live and work in another one of his theme parks but now the cheeky shite has bought everyone's incorporeal essence. It's an outrage.

He went on the add: I'd rather get cluster fucked by Devonshire Custard farmers than sell my wardrobe, or indeed my soul, to that jumped up Filet-O-Fish peddler."

Dick Cole, leader of the hobby political party Sons of Cornwall, when asked about the sale said: “Despite speaking English all day everyday I don’t understand your question. But what I will say is I’d like Cornish independence for our economically unsustainable county, all tourists to piss of back home – leaving behind their holiday money so we can buy our children shoes. Cornwall is for the Cornish and not for sale.”

Adding: “I’ve just inherited a lovely little fisherman’s cottage that would make a great holiday home, if anyone’s interested.”

Seven British holiday makers have been killed and eleven seriously injured after the coach they were travelling on was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade in Afghanistan.

They were on the way to Sangin, a small town located in the country’s notorious Helmand province, where they had planned to visit Osama’s Juicy Chicken Bar, a fashionable eatery recently described by Sunday Times food critic, A.A. Gill, as 'dangerously delicious' and 'sizzlingly sexy.'

However, the party of 28 tourists from Guildford, Surrey, who had told their driver they wanted to experience 'the real Afghanistan' were ambushed by militants as they entered the town. A US military spokesman said it was: 'somewhat unbelievable they weren’t all killed.'

Dangerous Restaurant Tourism (sometimes referred to as DRT) has been on the increase as well-heeled Westerners look to eat in ever more unpredictable neighbourhoods and war zones. Only last year, two British tourists were kidnapped in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, where they were trying to track down the world’s last surviving Wendy’s burger bar outlet.

Speaking from his home near Bury St Edmonds in Suffolk, former Beirut hostage Terry Waite said: 'This trend is very sad and it’s time someone spoke out and pointed to the very real dangers involved in DRT, possibly by writing a very long and tedious book.'

Waite was held for 1,763 days in the Lebanese capital after travelling to the country to dine at Ali’s Plaice, a fish restaurant he had heard television chef, Rick Stein, describe as 'Sublime…explosively busy,’ and ‘well worth the wait.'

The Foreign Office has reacted by pledging to publish 'a comprehensive list of areas that are safe to eat in' on its website by the end of the week. The make-up of the list has however already become embroiled in controversy after Home Secretary, Theresa May, asked for areas within the UK to be added, including Manchester's Moss Side, St Paul’s in Bristol and the whole of Hull.

The pristine coast of North Cornwall, home to some of Britain's most beautiful scenery, faces a new menace tonight after at least 500,000 barrels of utter crap from charity shops leaked from an underground bunker in Wales into the British channel. Experts say that the effects on the prestige of celebrity haunts in the region could be devastating.

Unknown to the public, charity shops in London have long recycled unsold goods up the M4 corridor. Once the best clothes have gone from Chelsea shops, the remainder is shipped to Reading and Swindon. After three months, they are moved on to Bristol and Cardiff. Eventually, what cannot be given away for free even in Merthyr Tydfil is stored in a sealed concrete bunker.

'It's a nightmare scenario,' admitted a spokesman for the Department of the Environment. 'This slick contains huge quantities of all sorts of toxic nasties: Katie Price autobiographies, Royal Doulton figurines of princesses on a swing, you name it. What would happen if this washed up outside Rick Stein's in Padstow doesn't bear thinking about.'

The coastguard are keeping a constant watch on the slick, now estimated to measure three miles by two at its widest. Some hope that the knitted tea cosies holding it together will biodegrade naturally, while others are urging the use of chemical dispersants to break down the most dangerous George at Asda trousers.

'Industry must also take a long, hard look at itself,' said Green MEP Caroline Lucas. 'We cannot, for example, just keep issuing CDs of Ibiza club music to returning holidaymakers, who invariably give it to the local charity shop one week later when they realise that you just can't listen to this shite when you aren't off your tits on drugs.'
