With the last Blur album Think Tank (1908) a distant memory, the BBC is set to celebrate the 90th anniversary of Damon Albarn's first first tediously worthwhile solo project. All BBC Radio stations will simaltaneously be rebroadcasting the work - a five hour operetta - in its entirity.

'Pylovarz' chronicles the life of George IV's pedicurist Campbell McDougall. It originally included a chorus of Tibetan Monks chanting in time with a de-tuned Pianola.

'Pylovarz is still a piece of work that I have a lot of fondness for' explained the Country House and Parklife composer - in a break from rehearsing his latest work - a 15 hour collaboration between Siberian open throat singers and a specially mic-ed up Sinclair C5.

'But clearly after 90 years it was sounding a bit dated. Thankfully the BBC have kindly allowed me to use Yaks instead of the monks, which was my original intention.'

The Pilsbury Anorexics Operatic Society’s gala opening night performance of Gotterdammerung ended in chaos last night when no-one could tell whether or not the show was over.

Audience member Mrs Brenda Miggins summed up the mood. “It was a travesty. Brunhilde was a size 6 teenage waif of a thing. She could hardly hold her shield, and they didn’t even bother with padding. We already have to concentrate hard in order to remember not to clap in the middle, how are we supposed to know when the end has arrived if there’s no overweight soprano to put us right? “

Society spokesman Dick Smee countered “In these enlightened times audiences must accept that outdated preconceptions have to be cast aside. It’s no longer acceptable in this day and age to ask a thin actor to ‘fat up’ for a role.

John Berry, former Creative Director of the ENO apologised 'unreservedly’ to Opera fans tonight in the wake of revelations that he ‘misunderstood’ the email regarding the ‘end of Oprah by 2011’. Blaming stress, overwork and a hectic poncing around schedule Berry’s PR adviser confirmed the 52 year old’s error claiming he was ‘tired and emotional’at the time.
“Of course John didn’t really mean to rubbish an art form he’s devoted his life to...” explained Barbara Goole. “...'Ludicrously expensive, overpaid salad dodger with a whole format which is basically tripe' quite clearly referred to Oprah Winfrey.”
Accusations that the whole episode has been a PR stunt in order to secure a front page slot for what was a weak and poorly written story have been hotly debated in forums up and down the internet but are flatly denied by Berry whose autobiography. “Spare Us A Tenor: My Life In Queer Street.” is published by Macmillan on Thursday.

'Boring Arsenal' is not a deliberate exaggeration Mr Custard, or at least it wasn't of old before Whinger got them into shape. I've even been to the Libary in the 80s with mates who were unaccountably that way inclined. It had a lot in common with opera: large immobile blokes, stupid costumes, self-serving histrionics...hey I can feel another sub coming on.

I've just remembered one bit of opera I do like: Ride of the Valkyries, when it accompanies the helicopter attack in Apocalypse Now, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHjWDCX1Bdw

It's not a helicopter attack, it's an aerial local stabilisation operation. Don't be so cynical.

I suspect what Mr Bang is getting at is that the piece is little more than a rant, thinly disguised as someone else’s semi-coherent rant, and not what he expects from a NB FP. In many good FPs an assumption that, say, footballers are thick or celebs are vain or politicians are self-serving liars, is taken as a starting point and then developed in a funny and/or clever way.

In Oxo’s defence, the ‘salad-dodger’ and other misconceptions are clearly ways of signalling that his sub was a deliberate exaggeration along the lines of ‘boring Arsenal’. The reality these days is more Agneta Eichenholz's memorable Lulu in six inch stiletto heels.

God, isn’t Alistair Darling boring?

I think you've missed the point Bang, (like a lot of stuff on here) you don't necessarily have to agree with it to find it funny. The humour is in the absurdity of the story not necassarily the content. You could just as easily do a sub on football's crap, ballet's crap.

FWIW: I thought the FP was excellent. Informed, witty and starting from an appealing and understandable point: the middle aged chap who suddenly realises his whole working life has been a waste of time, and he'd be better off doing something else.
