Quarantine staff at Norwich International Airport were shaken this morning when a cargo of 300 highly poisonous arachnids was found to contain what appeared to be a ‘yellow crescent shaped fruit’.

Dean Wiveton, the facility's resident vet and fruitarian, finally identified the rogue fruit as a banana, but was unable to ascertain the exact variety. The 'banana' was packed in ice and transported across the road to a nearby Tesco Express, where banana enthusiast Traci Toftwood excitedly claimed it was a rare Ducasse Banana – seen only twice before in the county.

Also known as a 'Sugar Banana' the fruit was swiftly taken away by staff from the Norwich Castle museum, where it will be exhibited for a couple of weeks. After which it is likely to be added to a batch of the Museum cafe's famous “Nelson’s Waterloo Banana cake”.

Two years ago, the tranquil Norfolk village of Shotesham hit the world’s headlines for all the wrong reasons when crazed gunman Barry Mather ran amok, killing five people and injuring 14 more. And residents say that their nightmare still goes on, because the tragedy has made them into a close-knit community for the first time.

It’s been ghastly,’ said Victoria Broadley, 45, wife of one of eleven consultants from the Norfolk & Norwich General Hospital that live in the village. ‘As if being unable to sell our barn conversion because of all the publicity wasn’t bad enough, now everyone wants to be friends with us.’

‘Just as I got back from getting my legs waxed in Norwich, that bitch Laura Walker runs up to me sobbing “Thank God you’re all right”, like she cared about anything more than turning up at the school in a more expensive designer dress than me, then the place is crawling with press asking me over and over if we were a close-knit community. I told them “No, you idiots, I know three other people by sight and that’s plenty” but they didn’t print it.’

On the morning of 24 May 2009, Mather, who was embittered by a nasty divorce and the failure of his painting and decorating business, first shot dead his ex-wife Julie and her new boyfriend in their council house. He then walked around the lanes of Shotesham screaming abuse and firing randomly as other local residents began the school run.

The casualty list might have been higher but for three of the resident doctors jumping into their cars and driving straight at him. Startled, Mather got onto his motorbike and drove away, later taking his own life in a country lane. One of the three, Crispin Brownlee, is still haunted by the consequences of his actions, not least the damage to his Morgan.

‘First I have to miss a round of golf tending to dying bumpkins, then come the invites to peoples’ houses and some wretched Community Association,’ Brownlee said. ‘It’s true what they say, a tragedy teaches you what’s really important in life. I just pray that one day we can put all this behind us and get back to the icily polite one-upmanship that used to make this such a nice place to live.’

'Britain has finally joined the 21st century,' announced James Trotman, managing director of Fox Trotman Country Living, at a special ceremony to mark the conversion of the last barn in England. 'For too long, these buildings have been eyesores; now they are stylish rural retreats that are sustaining the UK economy through dark times by stimulating local housing markets.'

The barn was one of ten that formerly blighted the landscape in the small Norfolk village of Shotesham. It is believed to have been used to house grain for reasons which are not yet clear and the smells coming from it were described by local home owners as 'a jolly nuisance'.

The other nine are now all occupied by the families senior doctors at the Norwich & Norfolk General Hospital but this one had been overlooked until quite recently, when Fox Trotman responded to an anonymous tip-off. Consultant opthalmologist David Bradley, his wife Victoria and their two children will move in next week.

'It's marvellous fnews or us and the local community,' commented Victoria Bradley. 'For the best part of a year, we were all crowded into a six-bed in Dereham, now we have enough space for us, the 4-by-4, the Morgan and the children, when they are home from boarding school. If they could only put some pavements in around the village, it would be perfect.'

There have been reports in some quarters that an oast house in Kent has yet to be converted into living space. Fox Trotman said that this has yet to be confirmed but if proven correct, they will be ready to act immediately. No barn owls could be reached for comment as the species was declared extinct in February.

Conservationists have stepped in to help prevent the small Norfolk village of Reepham from dying out as its inhabitants are lured away by the bright lights of major metropolitan centres such as Fakenham, Norwich and King’s Lynn. The move is a last-ditch attempt to return Reepham to former its glory days when it boasted a population of several hundred and up to five distinct family names.

‘The programme will draw on the region’s age-old customs,’ said Steve Jones today, professor of genetics at University College London. ’Adolescent brothers, sisters and cousins will be brought together in a specially designed enclosure called a family home, safe from the distractions of modern life such as skipping ropes and the wireless. We are confident that in these excellent inbreeding conditions, it will only be a matter of time before nature takes its course and a new generation of Reepham-ites come paddling forth.’

Sociologists have warned that if the people of Reepham were allowed to die out, generations of proud heritage would be lost, including the practice of calling newborn babies Lesley until their gender can be determined and families using their members’ IQ scores as their lottery numbers. The future also appears uncertain for the thousands of special needs teachers and biologists employed in the region to teach children about the birds and the birds, while some are concerned that the extinction of Reepham would halt advances in our understanding of how things were a rung or two down the evolutionary ladder.

But conservationists are confident that the scheme will be a success. ‘It’s exciting to be involved in a project to preserve such a really close-knit community,’ said Professor Jones. ‘All the residents have their fingers crossed, many since birth, and every face seems to carry that same look of dreamy hopefulness. Plus it’s great for us as scientists. For many of our team, this will be their first exposure to reproductive theory since GCSE biology.’
