Well thank you very much <strike>Gerry</strike> Wayland! I sat through the whole of the NK documentary and was it followed by a program about cakes? No it bloody wasn't!

It may be getting harder and harder to defend the BBC... and the license fee. But I hope it's not too much of a cliché to suggest that people in many parts of the world would be glad to have public service broadcasting of similar quality and independence...

I guess those that sympathise with the BBC bias will be fans of the BBC, while those that don't are more likely to dislike it. The trouble is, there's no option to opt out.

It astonishes me that the BBC is allowed to refer to a slight reduction in benefits for people who live in unnecessarily large houses at the expense of others as a 'bedroom tax', while bullying people to pay them for the privilege of owning a box with wires in isn't referred to as a tax at all.

It's in big trouble though. Over a million people are refusing to pay their TV tax at the moment due to technical loop-holes in the law. I hope it's the beginning of the end for an outdated relic.

Whatever one thinks of their broadcasting at home, the BBC Persian and Pashto broadcasts provide many people in Iran and Afghanistan with a relatively balanced and informed outlook on the world. Relative, that is, to the state-controlled media in Tehran and Kabul.

It amazes me that those on the left are supportive of a regressive tax like the licence fee. But I see there's been regime change in the Beeb news room, with a chap from The Times taking over. Interesting to see how that pans out.

Why does the BBC run an Arabic propaganda station in the Middle East? I find that particularly troubling. For balance, we should allow Iran to build a massive transmitter in the middle of London advocating the stoning of women and nuclear attacks on Israel.

Easy to criticise the BBC - but when compared with the output of other state broadcasters, and despite the critics, it's still by far the best. That's just a personal opinion. If the BBC lurches slightly towards the left - then surely, when judged by the same parameters - Sky lurches drunkenly and aimlessly towards the right. Recalling the Derryk Bird Cumbrian gun rampage - Anna Boteng crassly asked if the bodies of the victims were being left exposed in the sun - the BBC would never do that. Sure, it seems to have lost its way and become almost painfully PC, but for me at least, it continues to present a reasonably balanced view of events not only in our country, but also globally. But that's all just one person's opinion.

Oh, - EastEnders is horrendously depressing. Never understood the attraction.

If you ask a spokesman from the BBC what they think of the quality of their output (or of anything else) they will almost certainly describe it as "fantastic".

Not "good", "excellent", "brilliant", "outstanding", "dire", "reasonable", "terrible", "awful", "adequate", "variable" or "superb" - always "fantastic". Despite being paid as professional communicators, I don't think they know any other adjective, any more than they know what the word "fantastic" actually means.

The BBC would have more money to splash about if the licensing people knew what they were doing. My dad was living with us until he died at the end of January. As he was 88, he got a free TV licence. After he died, I dutifully 'phoned the licensing people at Bristol to tell them we needed to start paying.
"Oh no, the licence you have covers you until October," they said.
Me: "But we're not entitled to it, my dad's dead."
Them: "It causes too many problems to change things... you'll get a renewal notice in October."

On the other hand, a work colleague who doesn't have a TV was pursued relentlessly by them, to the extent that they demanded access to his house to check, turning up with a policeman to enforce their will. The (very remote) house duly searched, no TV found. On departure, the irate copper was heard to say, "I've got better things to do than go chasing all over the f*****g fens on behalf of the f*****g BB f*****g C!"

As for content on the BBC, I just don't watch the populist stuff, the arts coverage is good, the TV science coverage is aimed squarely at the average seven-year old and is therefore dire. Radio 4 is better, but still aimed at the GCSE generations.

The withdrawal from some sports programming annoyed me, but here I am completely at odds with my own argument regarding respect of licence-payers wishes:

1. The BBC should maintain a first-class news reporting service, irrespective of licence-fee payers wishes

2. The BBC should NOT ignore the wishes of its licence-fee payers with regard to sports programming- I think there has been a concious surrender of expensive sports to Sky, presuming that people who really want to watch it will pay the extra. I, however, really want to watch the cricket BUT am too mean to pay for Sky.

Scroat, can I join the ranks of the peeps you'd like to fuck off? I think the Beeb is doing a pisspoor job, although (a) it has some much-loved jewels and (b) I thoroughly approve of the licence fee. I just wish they wouldn't fill my screen with so much garbage night after bloody night. Whether the budget's £5 billion or £7.5 billion, it's still enough to do some things brilliantly - or too many things not that well at all.

Suburbandad, the licence fee is £145.50, not £110. How old is your licence??

Radio 6 is OK, but I can stream music for free from Nokia Music. In fact, I can stream awesome radio from anywhere in the world these days. There's a really great talk radio station in Spain, or so I'm told.

The BBC isn't as good as it used to be, and it's getting left behind. And that's not because the licence is capped, either: they really, really ought to be able to keep up with an annual budget of £7.5 billion at their disposal.

I think the BBC is pretty good on the whole. I listen to radio 5 all day and sometimes in the evening for the football and radio 4 for the cricket. You can't please all the people all the time. The LSE just like the sound of their own voice.
Some programs on BBC3 and 4 are utter crap so I don't watch them. My only complaint about them is their obsession with stories about themselves eg. The LSE story and this weeks chart. I don't care.

Very sad to see "The Voice" funded by the Licence Fee, but actually incensed to see "How Do You Solve a Problem like Maria?" and other free advertising for Andrew Lloyd-Webber funded this way.

"Horizon" used to be first-rate very week, with a detailed account of cutting edge science, or historical reviews, with how discoveries came about and put to the peer-review test. It's more variable in quality these days, with some editions succumbing to Tomorrow's World type gee-whizzery (TW infuriated me with constant reference to "special liquids" added to a "Special powder" then "mixed in a special way" - if none of it was "special" it wouldn't bloodywell work).
I still think it's news and current affairs reporting can be first rate, and should be treasured - agree with SubUrban Dad's take re. rarified stuff - it should do more of this.

I still think it a National treasure that we lose at our very great peril.

Which brings me on to the clownish Panorama LSE prank - this is a big mistake - if there is any doubt that academic visitors are not what they seem, this could be disasterous for serious enquiry. Look what happened when the CIA used polio vaccination as a cover for finding Bin Laden. Mind you wasn't John Sweeney the bloke who lost his rag on video with the Scientologists - he can't be all bad!

Hundreds of years ago, when I was a green and nervous trainee journo, the absolute pinnacle any of us could ever hope to achieve was a staff job with the BBC, with the other 2 channels seen as being lesser somehow.

Now, I reckon things have slid so much that the really good journos are going to Sky. It's still to American for my liking though, and I much prefer the good old stiff upper lip Beeb. I seldom watch tv these days, so I don't think I'm qualified to comment on the entertainment programmes, but when I do watch tv it tends to be Dave (Mr B is very possessive of the remote) and it seems that the best of the comedy quizzes etc are all BBC programmes.

I've never ever been a fan of ITV, it always seems like the tabloid to BBC's broadsheet, and the likes of Barrymore et al when I was younger seemed like the horrible sort of 'entertainer' who likes to pick on the poor soul who can't really defend themself.

I'm still quite happy to fork out for my TV Licence, I'd just much, much rather not have it spent on any more reality or celeb shows.

Wayland, you're excluding the whole of the radio output, and I suspect many of us would pay £110 a year for radio 4 alone. Also Cbeebies and CBBC are consistently fantastic - check out Justin's House, Horrible Histories, any of the pantos or the Easter ballet.

It's a measure of how far the right has managed to shift the argument that the BBC is consistently damned in whatever it does.
Sky News can push any ideology it likes in a bid for market share, the beeb has to attempt balance
The beeb goes for populist crowd pleaser stuff and is told that's not its remit, the commercial channels should have free rein on talent shows
It tries rarified arts and is told it's out of touch
If Sky hits upon a winning formula and milks it, it is congratulated by its shareholders. The BBC is condemned for failing to innovate.
Etc etc

Over the last two years the BBC has been dealing with a severe and sudden budget cut (goodbye regional reporting) and had all sorts of shit thrown at it, and still produced some pretty good stuff.
As for comedy, this site came about when JOF realised the beeb had cut back on its new writer opportunities for financial reasons. Many of you reading this have the talent to make it as scriptwriters, and I look forward to seeing your stuff on Dave or Uk Gold in 5 years' time.
