The Royal Mail says it's to change the colour of its vehicle fleet during campaigning for the General Election, in case customers see it as an endorsement of the Labour Party.

All fleet vehicles are currently the standard Postbox Red but will be re-painted Battleship Grey until May 7th.

"We recognise that colour recognition plays and important subliminal role in influencing voting patters." the group's Daniella Eldon said. "Therefore to avoid accusations of bias, all vehicles will be re-sprayed grey until the polls close. And at a cost of £75m, we think it's a bargain."

Critics back the move, although question the costs involved.

"£75 million is a lot of money to hand over just to avoid allegations of political bias." Simon Treacy from Postwatch commented. "My brother Jeff could get the whole lot done for at least half that. But we applaude the sentiment."

Meanwhile the move has drawn criticism from the Labour Party itself.

A spokesman said the idea was ludicrous and was the thin end of the wedge.

"It'd be like Peter Mandelson trying to sue God if David Cameron wins, because there was too much blue sky during the campaign."

"Everybody knows that Peter would use some heavies to break God's legs; he'd never bother with the courts."
