All so scarily true. I have worked on a few logos in my time in a different life. The design always came first with retrospective rationale. Then of course there is the "bible" laying down the rules from the minimum white space surounding it to the treatment if the logo is ever etched into gold, carved in stone or scratched on a tree with a penknife.

I tend to enjoy the niche stuff - often more interesting and funny than slight twists on the topical story of the day. So keep trying with the weird and wonderful!

That said, probably because of my lack of using Ebay of even picturing what their logos look like, this sub wasn't my cup of tea ... but I guffawed at this line:

"I'd like to propose a NewsBiscuit amnesty on the tech writer-copywriter front. Maybe I'll kick a football into the chat room on Christmas day."

When I first started on here, I had a go at quite a bit of stuff that wasn't that high profile. It's fun to write, but I found more stuff gets used if you target topical stuff or 'the zeitgeist (sp?)'

That's not intended as a criticism, just an observation. I'm not sure
any people will feel strongly about the eBay logo, but this is a brilliant place to explore this stuff and get things off your chest.

By the way, you're a copywriter? I'm pretty sure we technical authors are meant to be enemies...

A schoolboy error by a graphic design intern at high-end creative agency Lippincott has resulted in the wrong eBay logo being launched on the global stage.

Gavin Spinks, 17, was tasked with running the new logo design out on his high-end inkjet just in time for eBay CEO John Donahue to deliver a keynote presentation to the world’s media. But Gavin had failed to install the correct font on his Dell PC. Consequently, instead of the new logo being a graceful evolution from the old, crass but familiar, vertically-haphazard namestyle to something that embodies the essence of striking typographic beauty as befits a global brand, Gavin’s version of the logo — and now ours — looks like the bastard love child of Microsoft’s Arial font and a load of anorexic fridge magnets huddling together for warmth.

A frazzled art director is reported to have cried, ‘Fuck it, let’s go with it. They’re shit payers anyway.’

Too late to cancel the launch event, eBay’s marketing department hurriedly cobbled together some poetic justifications for the logo’s new look. The last-minute ‘logo narrative’ has added 50% to the total cost because of the need to employ a team of dead-eyed, faux-enthusiastic copywriters skilled at writing algorithmic copy that says nothing but has senior executives wetting themselves.

“We’ve leveraged the iconic colour arrangement and approachable form to reflect eBay’s heritage and evolved it with a brighter blue and darker yellow, and a streamlined arrangement to create more visual harmony,” said a marketing spokesperson for Lippincott.

“No we haven’t,” said Spinks, “we forgot to install Microgramma Bold Extended, the same one used on the USS Enterprise.”

“That’s not true,” chipped in an eBay spokesperson. “We retained core elements of our logo, including our iconic colour palette. Our vibrant eBay colours and touching letters represent our connected and diverse eBay community.”

“No they don’t,” said Spinks. “typefaces always do that crammed up thing when the correct font isn’t installed.”

Ironically, the new logo is now for sale on eBay, but has yet to secure any bidders.

“We’ve put it on the 7-day sale and thrown in some free Buffy videos, so we’re hopeful we’ll get a bite,” said a disconsolate Donohue.

The founding fathers of modern typography Adrian Frutiger, Eric Gill and Max Miedinger are all reported to be spinning in their graves, and Adrian Frutiger's not even dead yet.

Comic Sans designer Vincent Connare said, “I like it.”

yens123 on "Snooker world championship in doubt as Blackball demands more money"

The premier event of snooker was today thrown into disarray as reports surfaced today that the 'Blackball' has refused to take part in this years event unless her wage demands are met.

Blackball is apparently dissatisfied with the money on offer from Snookers governing body and was quoted as saying "not only do I get hit more than the other colours, Im worth more points".

Reverend Al Sharpton commented "Its a shame to see a white ball hitting all the coloured balls, especially the blackball. I thought we had overcome this kind of abuse and inequality based on colour decades ago".

Blackball has caused controversy previously in major snooker events, the most famous of which was when she decided not to go into the pocket during the deciding frame of the infamous 1985 world championships' final frame because "[Steve] Davis wasn't giving me a big enough cut".

Organisers are considering bringing in a special purple ball that was first made famous by Oprah Winfrey's portrail in "The Color Purple" when she played an unwanted sphere set in the environment of the Welsh Snooker Open of 1982.

Fifa staff have had their requests for a Windows upgrade rejected by senior managers according to an irate administrator.

The member of staff who wished to remain nameless said "We've been working on Windows 3.1 for more than 20 years and we thought a request to upgrade to Windows 95 would be passed by the management without any problems. Rejecting this upgrade is just senseless. Everyone in Fifa agrees that it is time technology was introduced to our offices!"

A leaked memo from Sepp Blatter to senior Fifa IT Managers is reported to have said "Technology is not necessary in the game of football. Ultimately the work has to be done by a human being so let's just leave it to our administrators to do without the use of complex technology. Afterall, if we start introducing technology to our offices, where will we draw the line?"

It is understood that the administrators at Fifa will be consulting their unions for further support on the matter.

Your posts are already dwindling, rikkor, old love. You're getting fainter and fainter, like Tinkerbell. But before you disappear completely in a puff of smoke, I feel I must point out that you may have to 'halve' your ripostes, not 'half' them. Dear me, what is the world coming to?

Why seekest thou me here? Seek me not among the living. With the holy season of Lent approaching, I feel that I may have to half my posts and ripostes. I may be so caught up in penances that my fingers will not even be able to touch the keyboard. We'll see.
