11 months old but timeless in its way. Must be worth bumping it up the board to catch the Ed's eye. It's a phenomenon you don't really see inside the M25, so that won't help my chances.

In a major pre election policy speech, the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, has unveiled plans for an amnesty for everyone ‘afflicted’ with what he described as a ‘socially challenged' or 'chav name’. Speaking in Basildon, Mr Brown said that the election pledge underlined Labour’s aspirational ambitions for Britain and would ‘remove millions of young people from the scourge of name poverty’.

Labour strategists, having discovered a correlation between that society’s underachievers and appalling Christian names, see the move as a real vote winner, with one expert excitedly promising that Labour ‘will de-albatross an entire generation of their transiently fashionable names.’

Although Whitehall officials are understood to be already compiling a list of unacceptable names, it is expected that people will be able to nominate names for inclusion on a shame and name website.

Home office draft plans allow anyone under the age of 25 with a chavy Christian name to change their name free of charge. To ease administration, the amnesty will be carried out in 3 tranches starting with female names A – K (Ashleigh to Kelsey), then L – P (Leah to Paige) and finally S – Z (Stacey to Zoe). Male names would be addressed at a later stage but special consideration will be given to needy cases such as Deano, Dexter or Tyler.

17 year old Cortnee Briggs was enthusiastic about the proposals ‘I’m definitely going to change my name to something more classy like Leanne or Paris.’ adding ‘but if I don’t get on with it, I can always change it for free again, like perhaps to Trixie.’

Tory insiders have condemned the announcement as ‘dumbing up’ and ‘blatant vote buying’ but calls for their party leadership to counter the proposal with an elite name amnesty have so far been rejected by the opposition spokesman, Peregrine Anstruther.

Almost makes me want to dig out all my old Russ Conway LPs Plucky.
Not a bad pianist. I can play a bit myself, but only to a level that makes me vaguely appreciate how difficult it is to play like that. Just to play all those notes without the music in front in you is a fantastic achievement.

A rare copy of the first comic featuring British superhero Fortyman has sold for £1 million, beating the previous record for a comic book. A 1931 edition of Daring Comics No. 1, considered by many to be the holy grail of comic books, was sold privately to an undisclosed buyer. The cover of the issue, showing the original price of sixpence, features Fortyman driving to another improbable rescue in his elegant trademark goggles and flat cap, scarf trailing in the wind.

Fortyman, so named because of his fearless ability to drive his 2-litre Rover Coupe at 40 miles per hour regardless of traffic, speed limits or road conditions, gained a wide following for his carefree disregard for authority and his own safety. Translated into German, Vierundsechzigkilometerprostundemann became a rallying figure for opponents of the Nazi regime later in the decade.

Fortyman’s ability to drive everywhere at unthinkable speeds averted many a potential disaster and saved countless damsels in distress. There was never any violence, just a cheery, "Hope I didn’t keep you waiting," on arrival at the scene, followed by his catch phrase, "Hop in, love," before he double-declutched his way into the sunset.

Sadly, as roads and cars improved in the post war years and road safety became a major issue, Fortyman’s popularity slowly waned, and his last adventure, Exeter Bypass, was published in 1963. His creators tried to update the character, for example by allowing him to speed up on motorways, but these innovations came too late.

His many fans continued to wear the costume and drive their Rovers, and latterly Hondas, everywhere at a strict 40 mph, whether on fast roads or in congested urban areas, and can still be found throughout Britain today. While other drivers find such behaviour infuriating, fans remain unaware of a problem, largely because they share Fortyman's disdain for using mirrors.

When one adherent was challenged recently, he said, "They'll have to catch me first," before driving over a busy pedestrian crossing and going the wrong way down a slip road at forty to make good his escape.
