Are you suggesting Oxbridge is bug-eyed and rubbery, umpire? Fair enough.

rfreed -- Bill Cosby! I love his stand-up. A few years ago out of curiosity and 'cos it was cheap I bought his CD 'Revenge'. That routine, and Buck-buck are still outstanding, what, 40 years on?

Jeni: gotta love the Rons. You'd be of an age (30somewhat like me) to tell me whether this actually happened, or is something I imagined: when I was a kid I remember they used to have a best of series called 20 Years of the Two Ronnies, then the next year 21 Years of the Two Ronnies, but in the intervening period they hadn't done any new stuff, so it was basically the same show with a different name. In my memory this happened for years on end...

Monty Python, aged about 8, especially the cartoon where a man gets eaten by a room which then burps. It's been a slow and disappointing climb downhill ever since...

I'm surprised that no one - myself included - has mentioned Phil Silvers. Seargeant Bilko was one of those "mustn't be missed" shows every week. Colonel Hall, Joan, Grover & Ritzik, Paparelli, Doberman et all.

And I once saw film of one of his live vaudeville acts which just creased me up. His skill was all in the timing.

And, fernandomando, while I have your ear, who was Ted Chippington? I missed him completely.

Yes Neal, we had that vintage Lego ad. Tickled the YM no end as a Lego obsessed 10yr old.
Two Ronnies is one that to my mind, has stood the test of time. Just after Ronnie Barker's death a few years ago, the transcript for the "Rindercella" sketch was emailed to me. Barker was a genuine comedy genius, and to have managed to keep a straight face during that sketch shows a real talent. "Fork 'andles/Four candles" is frequently trotted out but it is a great example of Barker's skill, both as a comedian and actor.

Morecombe and Wise was good, but for me, not quite as good as the TR's.

But both remind me of Saturday nights at my Grandparent's, with Grandad chortling before we'd gotten any where near the punchline, because he'd seen them all so often, a supper of Dutch Crispbakes with Primula Cheese and Ham Spread for supper, and being woken up at sparrow's fart to take the dog for a walk with my Grandad.

That made me laugh just thinking about it bpr. Was the lego ad with him on it used in the UK at Xmas?

And never mind comedy cherries, I think I should own up my first serious comedy true love would have to be Woody Allen. Out of absolutely nowhere discovered Manhattan on BBC2 one night. Had no idea who he was, but it was the start of something deep and meaningful I've never shaken off despite some well-publicised ickiness, and the Curse of the Jade Scorpion.

Ha, now Fawlty Towers, now there's a subject for discussion. Communication Problems is possibly the funniest 20 odd minutes of comedy I've ever seen, and a couple of the other episodes have great moments but overall, it's just a 70s sitcom... If they'd done more episodes, I reckon they'd have been found out.

I did a night class at the national film institute here in Ireland on Irish comedy in film and TV, and the lecture on perceptions of Ireland in overseas comedy (drunk, like fighting, riverdance -- yes Rikkor, turns out all those gags have been done before) saw a section on Fawlty Towers. Watching the crude, crass stereotypes of the Irish used by Cleese and Booth in a room full of Irish people was cringeworthy to say the least.

I dutifully laughed at the Young Ones, Neal, but never found it particularly funny. Faulty Towers was my secret embarrassment: couldn't watch it for years without cringing. My dad not only looked like Basil Faulty but had a similar temperament. He once threw a sun lounger chair off our roof into next door's back yard. He also had a penchant for disrobing at any opportunity.

I'd go for Spike MIlligan in his Q days. Since then, I've become a big fan of his and the best of the Goon Shows still make me laugh for his inventiveness.

Radio Active was brilliant and still an accurate portrayal of local radio and the TV series of the radio show - KYTV - is just as good.

All made me laugh - and still do

Someone I've been thinking about a lot recently as a big hero, and a sharp, erudite, witty writer but who I loved at the time just because he was funny on TV is Clive James. Showed you could be funny about stuff at the same time you were being serious about it, and liking 'sophisticated' culture didn't preclude enjoying the simplest silliest things too.

It'd be that, or Fry and Laurie in Friday Night Live/Saturday Live days.

I was the only person in my class, and might be the only person of my generation (if that's not making jp and cazz feel old) who just didn't like The Young Ones. Didn't get the fuss then, don't now. Could be the Neal/Neil thing, made my life hell.

Billy Connelly. The Banana Boots stuff, all on vinyl was a mainstay of my childhood. As a teen I watched his "Billy And Albert" gig, and actually peed myself with laughter.

But clever comedy would be either Blackadder all the way through or The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy books.

Who first made you laugh? I'm not talking about childhood mirthbringers, children will laugh at anything. To this day I am haunted by the memory of myself when very young begging to be allowed to stay up to watch Russ Abbott because I thought the bit where he danced around in a fat suit with a fat woman was the funniest thing in the wide world.

Who first made you laugh like a grown-up?

For me it was Blackadder Goes Forth which was broadcast when I was twelve and made me fall in love with the Stephen Fry comedy generation. Blackadder was and is brilliant and the shock of that final scene was possibly the first time I'd thought about anything seriously ever.

Who popped your comedy cherry?
