An attempt to celebrate the success of Britain’s DIY community was said by organisers to be “A pretty good job really” despite the stage on which the awards were held collapsing shortly after it had been assembled.

The show’s host Tommy Walsh, one of the UK’s most experienced DIYers said the stage collapse was “Part of the original design” following the collapse which led to the breakage of six large terracotta planters along with expensive electrical items which had been placed on the stage.

The awards suffered a poor start when Walsh was unable to find the envelope containing the first of the award category nominations. “I thought I’d left it on the lectern but it’s gone missing” said a confused Walsh as he desperately searched his pockets for the award. Fortunately the nomination was found 15 minutes later, still on the lectern, but underneath a large packet of screws, nuts and bolts.

The awards commenced with a celebration of Britain’s best DIYers but again events did not go as planned with the opening ceremony taking two hours instead of the allotted three minutes because the electric drills had not been charged, organisers had to nip to B&Q to buy a small metal bracket, and it proved impossible to find the right size screwdriver to hold the microphone on its stand.

Organisers pledged that next year’s awards would be more professional and that they would “Learn from this year’s mistakes, and anyway if Tommy was a proper DIYer he would have used a chisel instead of searching around for a poncey screwdriver.”
