Fortunately the nomination was found 15 minutes later, still on the lectern, but underneath a large packet of screws, nuts and bolts.</p> <p>The awards commenced with a celebration of Britain’s best DIYers but again events did not go as planned with the opening ceremony taking two hours instead of the allotted three minutes because the electric drills had not been charged, organisers had to nip to B&amp;Q to buy a small metal bracket, and it proved impossible to find the right size screwdriver to hold the microphone on its stand.</p> <p>Organisers pledged that next year’s awards would be more professional and that they would “Learn from this year’s mistakes, and anyway if Tommy was a proper DIYer he would have used a chisel instead of searching around for a poncey screwdriver.” </p>
