I would add to my earlier post that satire, for me, is at its best when aimed at things people choose to do, i.e. behaviours; people choose to be venal, amoral, cruel, vindictive, callous, gluttonous, thoughtless and so on, and consequently these things are legitimate targets for humour. Jokes about things over which people have no choice are not.

Initially giving it the benefit of the doubt I assumed the sub was having a pop at blame culture. 'There's been a tragedy, no time to think of the victims or their families right now though, we have to concentrate on deciding whose fault it was.'

The problem was I think it didn't do a great job of it. If you're going to touch on sensitive subjects you have to be a) making a valid point, and b) do a bloody good job of it. Which is why I wouldn't go near something like this. It can be done though, as long as the sentiment isn't 'ha ha, people died! Lol!'. Not saying that's what this one was, just don't think it worked.

Darkbill had an FP based on people's first reaction to the Japanese earthquake being to think how it might affect them. That one very much divided opinion and upset quite a few people.

Here it is if you've not seen it and want to see which side you fall on:

http://www.newsbiscuit.com/2011/03/14/japan-earthquake-devastation-sparks-panic-buying-of-high-quality-blu-ray-players/

making a point is valid but as squirrel says, isn't context uppermost?
I had a go at Saint Jimmy today, not to upset his bereaved fans & relatives but because I saw the 'lying in state' issue as risible, OTT and rather tacky ergo fair game.
I actually admired Savile as a genuinely weird eccentric nutter and I'd be willing to bet he'd see the funny side of the piss being taken out of his own demise, does that make me an insensitive shit?

I m not easily offended. Even if the subject matter is close to me. Hopefully that means i can be very objective when looking at close to the bone posts.
The thing what must always be asked is, what point is being made. Sometimes out of tragedy, you can make light out of something to highlight a bigger and important point. That i believe is satire. However the fireworks post, was just trying to be funny for the sake of being funny. And to even use the 'too soon' defence would never apply because there is no valid point being made. I think the defenciveness of following comments by the poster shows you that they were more interested in getting a reaction.

Rant over

As an infrequent and rarely funny poster, may I say that satire doesn’t work for me when it’s aimed at the dead and bereaved. The people who make jokes about such things are shits.

I think it's very difficult to try and pin down what is and isn't funny. I suppose it all depends on the context. Certainly jokes/subs on the terrible loss of life on the motorway are beyond tasteless; it's just sick.

Generally on Newsbiscuit the majority of users are talented enough to submit stories and one-liners that are genuinely funny and entertaining without having to resort to such dross as we have seen recently.

There have been numerous discussions on what is and isn't funny here over the years, and to date, no conclusive answer has been reached.
It's very much a matter of personal taste, and while I find some 'sick' jokes incredibly funny, I think that to suggest that the horrific carnage on the M5 was somehow due to people not watching where they were going incredibly distasteful. Perhaps because I've driven in similar conditions where a wall of smoke has reduced visibility to feet, and still have recurring problems from the resultant accident.

But each to their own...

May be an idea to voice concerns about certain subs here rather than keep bumping up things you find of dubious taste?

On a wider note, a debate on what is & isn't "funny" would be interesting?

Mrs 4fun also fits into that category with you Jeni.

But she does listen to The Archers every once in a while. Does that count? We treat it as an educational programme about the countryside.

I did watch a few of the very earliest EE episodes until one evening I suddenly realised I was starting to care about the welfare of a dog on the show. Still sweat a bit thinking about that narrow escape.

...pretty much dozed through Newsnight, but woke up during Burnistoun, then watched Women! (Vous les Femmes)

Has anyone else watched it? Comedy sketch show written and performed by ...French ...women...

I know, it sounds like a disaster, but some of it was quite funny. Many of the sketches have no punchline...they are just odd.

Oh, and they are naked in some scenes.
