I thought all the battenberg cakes were blown up, in a boat off Ireland, by the gallant IRA about 30 years ago.
The true rate of inflation is gauged by Morrison's Genoa cake. It's currantly running at 9.25%

Brilliant find, sauce. (Note: the 'That'll Do' range already featured once or twice in NB).

My picture, Mr T, not so much a brilliant find, more a piece of creative inventionalism, though I suppose you could say I 'found' the idea in my mind. (Just for the record.)

Bravo, Mr Aglor, for your tour de force in posting that sinister illustration. It may seem trivial now, but I am forecasting Tesco as The Company Store, when Goldman Sachs has gathered to itself all the world's cash, debt, derived cash, etc., etc., and wages have disappeared altogether. Under IMF Rule, taxpayers will be born in arrears, and work the first 50 years of their lives to clear their debt, against which they will receive food, housing and clothing vouchers from The Company Store.

The low standard of accuracy will guarantee a short life-expectancy, an economically-managed Private Health Sector, large profits for The Store, as helpless pions attempt to cash in their misprinted vouchers.

I think we have to go for Battenberg, for that is the spelling on the box. And, if anyone knows about cakes (and presumably their spellings), it is Mr Kipling.

I don't understand why the society of international comparative linguists, so active elsewhere on this site, haven't been in on this thread to sort out whether Battenburg is the correct spelling. I always thought it was Battenberg. (Judging by the dotted red underlining, the built in edit box spell-checker here doesn't know either.) Battenburg, although obviously related to Battenberg, refers to the high-visibility chequered pattern used on emergency vehicles.

Right, I'm off to write a piece about a cake on wheels...

we are all different, mr modo. i just don't happen to like salad or onions in hotdogs. i live lots (tho perhaps not at the moment, with the broken shoulder and all).

My 11 year-old made bread the other week and it only took around an hour, start to warm mouthfuls with loadsa butter. Apparently, she informed me, the fancy arsed "knocking back" and second proving is all a bit unnecessary: mix it, knead it, shape it, prove in a warm place (on top of the hot water tank in our house) for 30 mins then into the hot oven for 20-30 mins. Mmmm.

Not as good as Battenburg. But cheaper and easy. (Though possibly not with a broken shoulder.)

Purple sprouting is prohibitively expensive in the supermarkets. But very good value in the local green grocers'.

Mr Sauce's birthday today. So 11 year-old has been commissioned to bake a carrot cake. That means I'm on logistics and washing up. Up early to do some work (erm?) before it all kicks off.

Of course you want onions on your hotdog (mmmmmm), why not? Live a little, you might be amazed. Go to the states (or my local NY style diner) and you can have chilli or melted cheese on it as well. Salad in sandwiches does seem to be the big divide in our society today. I demand it, but there are plenty of grown ups who react like a child confronted with a Brussels sprout when they see it. Odd.

The price of Cauliflour these days is a scandal as well, so the forces that be are not just singling out battenburg.

onions in a hotdog? no, i don't think so! i like onions when they are mixed up with other things but if i forgot to say 'no onions, thanks' with a hot dog i would have to scrape them all out...but then i don't like salad, either and every sandwich maker seems to assume that a bit of salad will brighten things up.

i am playing things conservatively with the shoulder as new x rays reveal three fractures. what a bumhole.

It's odd - I really do not like Battenberg. But Mrs MrChigleysAunt and the Chigley children love it. It's a funny old world though. I was asked today if I wanted onion on my hotdog (I was purchasing a hotdog). At my look of "wild surmise" the lady serving assured me that many people do not have onion. Until that moment, it had never occurred to me that the foundations of civilization were so shaky. You share the world with people, and you think you know them, but then something like this comes out of "left field" as I believe our American cousins have it.
Sorry to hear that the shoulder is still painful. Have you tried some sort of compress?

no, there is nothing in battenberg that can stimulate serotonin or prevent its reuptake, as far as i know. anyway i am so much fluoxetine and amitryptaline that i am virtually swimming in it. shoulder is painful tho.
