It was only a five-second lapse in concentration but it was enough to ruin 48 years of hard work. For in the five seconds between opening the curtains and realising the problem, Joan Bonsall, 72, it was too late: a busload of people had seen her walking about inside her living room with the lights on.

‘I don't know what made me forget,’ sobbed Bonsall. ‘Maybe it was because I’m that worried about our Martin’s Shania I didn't sleep a wink the night before. Her’s been a-courting this young man she met at university - her's got a degree in Psychology you know - but neither of them's got a job yet. What will people think?’

Ever since acquiring her three-bed ex-council house in Halesowen in 1964, Bonsall had kept a strict routine with regards to the living room. She replaced the entire suite of sofas twice a year and rearranged the room every morning in the dark, opening the curtains and ducking quickly behind the door as she left. None of her five children has ever set foot in it, she is proud to say.

To compound Bonsall’s misery, the bus in question was the 82 from Dudley that passes the house at 7.35 every morning. This meant that among the passengers currently gloating over their three-second glimpse of excruciating blunder were Susan from the greengrocer's shop, the man from the garage whose son’s a bit strange and the woman from Kingswinford whose sister run off with Bonsall's cousin's former best man.

Not all of her family are sympathetic to Bonsall’s plight, however. Daughter Jane, 36, said: ‘She thought the embarrassment would kill her in 1968, when my dad got a ticket to see West Brom in the FA Cup Final and moaned to his friends at work after she made him leave it in the attic for best It didn't, though.'

Bonsall's husband, Albert, died of a stress-related illness in 1987, while her first two sons, James and Michael, who would now be 42 and 40, have not been seen since shinning down a drainpipe to go to a Youth Club disco in 1990. Youngest son Martin, meanwhile, refused to comment on allegations that Shania was conceived on the living room floor.

Sorry, this was a mess when I first posted it. I ran the 'wife test', and it failed. So I've repaired it, and she's grudgingly given it a provisional pass, with a couple of minor advisories.

London buses expressed outrage today, after being compared with a deadly meteorite. Meteor 2011MD only narrowly missed colliding with the Earth, and was described as 'bus-sized' in many newspapers. "I might puff out the odd belch of black smoke", complained Bus No. 51, "and I did destroy the offside door mirror of a Volkswagen Passat last weekend. But that's hardly the same as mass extinction, is it? People can be so uncaring sometimes."

Buses have been used as a standard measuring device for some time now. Stacked up with little regard to maximum axle loads, packs of buses have cruelly been used to measure the heights of buildings, trees and dinosaurs. Some have even been forced underground, to measure the size of caverns. Many never recover, ending up on the scrap heap while still in their prime.

"We're sick of being compared with blue whales, tyranosaurs and skyscrapers. All this sizeist talk can be really hurtful. But to somehow link us to an astral body that threatens the very existance of life...who wouldn't take umbrage?", asked a tired-looking Dennis. There were murmurs of support from several jumbo jets, and a house in Stevenage.

"We're not asking a lot, we just want a little bit of dignity", pleaded the bus. "We've even witnessed public outings of bendy buses, and tourists exploiting our topless models. We've taken legal advice, but we were told we can't pick up in junctions."

Other buses have complained about segregation on the roads. "We're being made to drive in special pink lanes, it's so humiliating. They don't let us go in the really fast lane on motorways, and we're faced with endless protests. If I see one more shelter waving a 'bus stop' placard, I don't know what I'll do', seethed a Number 82.

Other buses were quick to join the protests. "We're facing constant discrimination. I've been turned down from a coaching job on the grounds that my chassis's too big", said a disgruntled RouteMaster. "And then there's the constant jibes: 'you wait all day for a bus and then two come along at once. Oh wait, it is just one bus. a really fat one.' I've heard them all, it gets wearing after a while."

"It's an unending struggle against the private hire cars, and trying not to run out of diesel. But I guess it's inevitable. Nothing is certain but derv and taxis."

virtuallywill on "Network Rail seek replacement bus service for High Speed rail link."

Network Rail has requested quotes for the replacement Bus Service for the yet to be “green-lighted” high speed rail link
If construction does go ahead it could begin as early as 2017, the 250mph trains could run as fast as 400Km/ph by 2025. If the autumn is particularly wet or windy or dry then the replacement bus service would be required.
Mr Steve Milliband spokesman for “The consultation group to decide if railway is needed” said “We see the possibility for a replacement bus service between Birmingham during September 2025, around the 8th, at about 10.08, It may be that some passengers will want to travel out of London, but I cannot think why”.
There already several interested groups, First National, Stagecoach, Replacement bus services limited, and Ryan air.
Ryan air have submitted a quote of less than £95.00 for 20,000 passenger journeys, though this does not include seating, or food, or drink, or toilets or buses.
