Mary,

In my school they regularly beat up the kids. When they weren't molesting them.

One boy got beaten up because he didn't have his book out ready for the lesson. The fact that he'd only just arrived in the country, after General Amin had booted all the asians out of Uganda, was no excuse.

So Mr O'Reilly bashed the crap out of him.

I guess we all learned something that day at my catholic school.

We learned that racism and violence are part of a broad church open to anyone. Even black people and irish can get involved.

After that summer, i was never the same again. It was the beginning of a journey I......

If the youth had actually died from his injuries, would the teacher still have been excused for his actions?
Rather fitting the kid was struck with a dumbell...teacher could have claimed he was trying to knock some sense into him???
Strange that as adults we are regulated, controlled, supervised, watched, ruled, spyed upon, surveilled (?) but as children when we need it most of all it has all but disappered.
You are not born with respect, it has to be taught.
I forgot to wash up last night and have been sent out to pick up litter
Should have hit him with a globe

I've change my mind a bit over this. The students were brats and, as Mr Will points out, went into the class with the intention of winding the teacher up as much as possible and even to video it. However...

The man has been ill and I suspect is still suffering. Perhaps he should have been advised or told not to go back to work. Otherwise, if it he the strength to do it, he should have removed himself from the classroom. There can't be any justification for such a massive assault on another, younger person for whom the teacher is in loco parentis.

This is in no sense meant to justify the pupils' behaviour, either.

It is no coincidence that the assault was recorded. The students were trying
to see who could wind the teacher up the most. Video phones and video cameras
were apparently routinely brought in to class as part of the one-upmanship.
Any pupil who did this was partly culpable, as were the senior members of
Staff who through neglect or ignorance left the teacher to his own devices.

In my day, coming home from school bleeding and bruised was par for the course. In no way did my parents respect our teachers and their punishments, but any complaining would elicit another slap at home. It was just the way life was, and it was beautiful.

This type of thing is going to keep happening until society finally accepts that all teachers should be allowed to use mild-excessive force to keep rule in the classroom.
No one would seriously claim that a dumbbell is ok to use in this situation, that would be wrong. But maybe using a foam baseball bat or a much lighter dumbbell would give a good balance between protecting the rights of the child and the adult.

Indeed - these are interesting points. I sure as hell wouldn't want to teach in many of today's classrooms and these kids should shoulder some blame for their classmate's injuries, but I just can't find it in me to condone that level of violence. But I saw these three lovely chaps on telly last night who are going to sort the education system out for us, so we don't need to worry about it one bit.

A better analogy might be 'pensioner hitting hoodie', where the pensioner would be up for GBH after finally responding to nightly attacks on property, repeated abuse in street, shit through letter box etc over a long period.

I support this guy. Working with school children everyday really can be hellish.

The fact that the children had planned to provoke a teacher known to have stress issues while filming the results to be posted online, suggests that these little darlings need a kicking now and then.

Clearly, assaulting someone with a dumbell is wrong and can't justified in any way. On the other hand, I can understand that this man was driven to breaking point, having been provoked for a long time. It could hardly be attempted murder, as this requires premeditation.

It is also worth reflecting on what 'allows' kids to act in the clasroom in the way this boy did. Looking back, I suspect the 'student-centred' education theories of the 60's had something to do with it. I used to be an advocate: student-centred learning was a reaction to the 'teacher as the person who knows everything' but, somehow, the whole thing fell apart. Children and teenagers somehow lost respect for teachers. Perhaps because teachers were determined to 'be like the kids' and try to reduce the distance between the two groups. It could never have worked. There is de facto a difference between being an adult teacher and a student.

Perhaps this incident illustrates the need to maintain the distance. It is interesting to note the cultural differences on this point. In areas such as South East Asia, students would never think of disrespecting their teachers, let alone telling them to 'fuck off' etc. There are downsides to that, too. Those students also rarely, if ever, question what their teachers tell them. Perhaps, as always, we need to find a balance.

I'm on his side, based on the fact that these particular kids had a reputation for deliberate provocation with the intention of filming the results.

Obviously, GBH is GBH, but I think the fact that he declined bail and has already spent several months in prison tells me his moral compass is intact. Teachers are slowly but systematically having their authority undermined, and feeling increasingly powerless.

'He had been mocked by pupils calling him a "psycho" in the moments before the attack, the jury was told.'

I can't help thinking that the kids might of had a point. Regardless of provocation, I still don't quite understand how he managed to get away with GBH without intent? I would have thought that screaming "die, die, die", while simultaneously caving someone's skull in with a dumbbell, does demonstrate that there was at least an element of intent.

Mind you, I suspect that there's at least one counsellor in Notinghamshire somewhere, who is feeling a little bit culpable at the moment...

'He was signed off sick for nearly five months and given counselling sessions by a therapist who told him he was too "peaceful and passive" and needed to let his anger out.'

So what do we think about this teacher's acquittal for smacking a kid? Lord knows I don't understand how teachers don't smack the little swines every day, but a dumbbell? Back in my day, my music teacher used to throw hymn books at us or the occasional music stand, but never gym equipment... Whatever the provocation, he fractured the lad's skull and yet is being treated as some kind of victim. If it had been a hoodie on a pensioner, I feel the judgement would have been rather harsher...
Interested to hear your views.
