A friend of mine went on a stag weekend that was a survival course run by an ex special forces guy. On the first night, while navigating themselves to the rendezvous they stopped off at a pub, met the local poacher and arranged to buy a deer off him. They got top marks off the instructor for initiatve, as the next day's task was going to be finding their evening meal.

Yep, "build a stable tower as high as you can" says the facilitator. My group built a tower so high we had to take it to the entrance hall (we reckoned 25 feet) it swayed worse than a drunk in Queens Street "nope its not stable" - one of my lot shouts "the fucker hasnt fallen over has it?"

You have reminded me of those awful 'team building' workshops of days gone bye, where building lego models of things were supposed to increase your management skills and confessing your weaknesses made you stronger. 'Worken on' is a nice phrase, Mr Imodo.

Are you related to the Imodium family, of diarrhea treatment fame? Just asking, no offence meant.

The Ostrich egg on Mount Kilamanjaro as a last minute addition to the task reminds me of pretty much any project I've worken on in the last 10 years. No matter how simple the problem to be solved, the MD tends to tag on that it should be done while hopping and carrying a bowl of soup as well.

That was unfortunate, MrMr. For that you needed Davidson, J. and Hancock, F. (2007) Four Thousand Methods of Cooking Ostrich Eggs on Mount Kilamanjaro: an essential primer, Stanley Thornes, Gloucester. The man does sound a bit of a bum-hole, though.

I went on a course once where the guy taking the course asked us to write a plan to boil an egg - then at the last minute he dropped the vital information that it was an Ostrich egg and he wanted to eat the said egg at the top of Kilamanjaro. Bastard.

Oh dear. I was just trying to help the neophyte egg cooker. It would be impossible to list all the variables (size of pan, type of egg, size of egg, amount of water, ways of putting egg in water etc.) If you need these sorts of details, you need Myerscough, J. (2009) The Science of Egg Cooking (3 vols), Routledge, London. Its an introductory work but useful.

Me and Mrs Munky have started on the Chardonnay.

Dear The Reporter, a snipers rifle would surely be more discriminatory not less?

Dear Mr Thesecond, fresh eggs not cold water is what is required. Hygroscopy, water and all that.

Dear Munkster, "until cooked" is far too vague. Cooked for a hangover cure, soft boiled and hard boiled are very different things.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm having a beer moment.

If you put a cold egg into boiling water the shell is more likely to split, with a wafty cloudy egg-soup the result. I always start with cold water.

I did wonder how the logistics of shelling an egg, at some distance I might add, would have been possible in a breakfast hour

It isn't that sort of shelling, really, Mr Reporter. Its a sort of shorthand for 'take the shell off the egg'. I do hope you don't take a rifle to breakfast. Perhaps I should have made things more clear.
