			<title>Gary Stanton on "Now you mention it, our flag does look a bit like a swastika, says AWB"</title>

			<description>&#60;p&#62;Senior members of the far right Afrikaaner Widerstand Beweging were said to be mortified last night after someone pointed out that their party flag is as close as you can possibly get to a swastika, without actually being a swastika.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Officials are concerned that the flag will attract negative publicity ahead of local elections, with some sections of the media keen to portray the party as Nazis. However, in recent months the party have made great steps to embrace the centre ground by allowing black people to register and by spending a lot of money on suits.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Flag designer, Martin Beyerskloof , sought to deflect criticism of himself amid a growing media storm:&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;‘People say it looks like a swastika but I actually based it on the three-legged flag of the Isle of Man. It’s essentially a nostalgic tribute to the two glorious weeks I spent at a whites only B&#38;amp;B in Douglas. ‘&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;The latest furore is one of a series of setbacks for Beyerskloof,  who joined the party after spending time as a struggling artist in Capetown. He believes his largely Aryan-themed works were rejected because a significant proportion of the galleries are owned by blacks. ‘It has fuck all to do with the fact that I’m shit at painting,’ he claimed.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Beyerskloof also blames the new wave of British artists for changing fashions in art.  ‘In the good old days before political correctness, you could paint a muscular blond youth gathering wheat and it’d sell for thirty thousand rand – that’s about five quid. These days it’s all sharks in formaldehyde and unmade beds full of condoms. But what does a shark have to say about racial purity?’&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;A competition is now under way and the party faithful have been encouraged to submit their own designs. Alas, there are already hints that the new message of inclusivity has been poorly received. Those shortlisted include a gigantic white fist, a version of the rainbow flag with all of the colours removed and a gazelle being attacked by a lion which looks suspiciously like an intact version of Eugene Terreblanche. &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;A party spokesperson was last night keen to stress the new emphasis on multiculturalism:&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;‘Together we are stronger, our members understand this, even if one or two of them are still the kind of people who think Ron Atkinson was hard done by.’
