Veteran anti-war protester Brian Haw is to apply for academy status for his peace camp at Parliament Square. ‘For too long my protest has been held back by bureaucracy and red tape,’ said Mr Haw, ‘academy status would take me out of local authority control and give me the freedom to run my tent without continued interference from Boris Johnson and the police.’

Mr Haw, who has been camped outside Parliament since 2001, is hoping that his tent will be ‘pre-approved’ for fast-track academy status in the autumn. ‘I have been here for almost a decade educating the public about the atrocities of war,’ he said, ‘nobody has managed to get rid of me yet, so I think I qualify as 'outstanding'.’

‘Academy status would give Mr Haw the freedom to run his protest as he chooses,’ said Director of Liberty, Shami Chakrabarti, ‘it would allow him to opt out of police harassment, dawn raids and endless form filling down at the station.’

The application has already been strongly opposed by London Mayor Boris Johnson: ‘This is utter madness,’ he said, 'We cannot have a bunch of hairy faced hippies corrupting young minds with their message of peace. It isn’t even on the National Curriculum.’

Critics of the scheme are concerned that if Mr Haw is granted academy status then it may drain resources away from other less successful protests. ‘I have been running a pro-war campaign for years’, said a Mr T Blair, ‘It is completely unfair that Mr Haw should get taxpayers money to fund his protest when I am forced to travel the world taking multi million dollar contracts just in order to survive.’

‘We will consider this application on its merits,’ said Education Secretary Michael Gove, ‘but the decision to grant Mr Haw’s tent full academy status will ultimately depend on the verdict of the inspectors - unlike the decision to go to war in Iraq.’
