In my experience, the worst drivers are usually in vehicles that they (probably) don't own - commercial vehicles, reps. cars, etc, and ladies (of both sexes) in 4x4's who think that driving something huge compensates for being a shit driver.

In the UK, all foglights must be switched off if visibility is better than 100 metres. I had thought this applies only to rear, but apparently it's the front ones too.

As with all generalisations (including this one), there are exceptions. I have actually seen well driven BMWs. No well-driven Subarus, though.

I guess some cars are just too comfortable. I drove a hired Merc once, in the rain, and suddenly realised that the cars I was overtaking were doing 60 not 40 - I was actually doing >100 rather than the 60 I'd thought until I looked at the speedometer. Shook me somewhat.

actually always wondered myself if there was a rule other than the pride of driver to have found the go faster lights. Guess BMW has to design an automatic safety feature cutting the speed to 30mph when rear fog lights are switched on as in Germany the rear fog lights are only permitted to be used if the visibility is below 50m and then you are only allowed to drive 50kmh.

FFS, where to start.
A lot of the pricks who used to give beemers a bad name are now in A4/5 or tt's.
A lot of folks turn fogs on when needed, then never turn them off, all cars (execpt some Fords where it's impossible).
Not all van drivers a knobs.
I drive a van, use dipped beam when needed, never drive on sidelights, know the 2 second rule, and how to indicate generally and also on roundabouts, including left when my exit is next.
So, anyway, the sub still made me laugh, and gets stars, and could be a decent nib, or re-worked into a good sub.
Incidentally, beemers have the dimmest sidelights to spot in the rain/fog, especially when looking in a rain splattered wing mirror in grey conditions. Dim lights on a grey car in grey conditions against a grey road, the only time I see them is when they flash their headlights angry I pulled into what I thought was an empty lane....indicating my intent....
I'll shut up now, beats a shot of gtn.....

If you really want to rip the piss out of Beemer drivers how's about basing it on fact?

For cars made in Bavaria, nestléd as it is beside those high pointy Alpy things and an area not unfamiliar to lashings of snow and ice, they are completely and utterly useless at the very first flake of the white stuff. I've had little old dears in their Daewo's overtaking me with smug relish on hills in recent conditions.

As for fog-lamps, well mine doesn't have them. As far as I know. But I've only had it a couple of years and haven't managed to twiddle all the knobs yet...

The fog which descended over large parts of the country didn't pose much of a problem for most of Britain's motorists - they just slowed down and turned their foglights on.

But this last option wasn't open to drivers of BMWs, who habitually leave their foglights turned on day and night and in all weather conditions.

Sales manager Gavin Thrace, 34, spoke of his frustration at having no facilities in his German-built 5 Series Saloon to deal with the sudden blanket of fog. "I was keeping to 60 mph going through this Cotswold village, yeah, and was about to open her up when I hit all this fog. I looked down at the controls and saw there were no more lights I could turn on."

Mr Thrace blamed BMW for the oversight. "I've got sidelights, halogen headlights and foglights, yeah, but nothing for actual fog. There should be another set of lights for conditions like these. I could hardly see anything and had to stay under 80."

A spokesman for BMW welcomed the suggestion. "Anything that further distinguishes BMW drivers from other, lower class drivers is worth investigating." Paradoxically, he explained that BMW was in the process of removing indicator lights from the 7-Series range "as our customers told us they never bothered with them."
